Vera Bradley co-founder announces retirement

Vera Bradley Inc. co-founder Patricia Miller says she will retire from the Indiana-based handbag and luggage maker she helped start in 1982.

The company announced Miller's retirement in a news release Thursday. The statement says Miller will continue to serve on the company's board of directors and on the board of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Vera Bradley was founded in 1982 by friends Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Miller. The company says Baekgaard will continue as chief creative officer.

Miller served as Indiana's first secretary of commerce in 2005 and also as president of the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Vera Bradley has more than 1,500 employees, including 800 in northeastern Indiana.

Miller also serves on the boards of the Indiana University Foundation and other IU-related groups.
