The 45-year-old Eisenhower Bridge wasn't included among grants announced this week by the U.S. Department of Transportation. A total of $584 million was awarded for 72 projects.
It is the third time that federal officials have denied grant money for the Anderson project, the Herald Bulletin reported.
Madison County officials had hoped for a grant to pay 80 percent of the estimated $15 million cost to replace the bridge.
County Commissioner John Richwine said the county might sell bonds to finance the project in the city about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
