Pence asked Obama for the meeting in a letter Thursday, suggesting it could occur while Obama is in southwestern Indiana on Friday to tour a steel processing company to mark Manufacturing Day.
The state-run alternative to traditional Medicaid — dubbed Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0 — would rely on optional payments by consumers and a hybrid health savings account model. Pence's proposal is being reviewed by Obama's Department of Health and Human Services.
Pence has long criticized Obama's signature health care law. In 2012, he apologized for equating the Supreme Court ruling upholding the law with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
