A Republican Congressional group says the
climate bill passed by the House committee will amount to a massive tax
increase and must be defeated. And it’s spreading its message in a series of
energy summits, including one in Indianapolis
today.

Rep. Mike Pence from Indiana, who is chairman of the House
Republican Conference and the American Energy Solutions Group, says a cap-and-trade
feature in which pollution permits could be traded on the open market won’t
work.

Instead, he favors a plan that he says would
make America
energy independent by developing domestic gas, coal and oil reserves;
developing solar and wind projects; increasing conservation; and using new
technologies to store or use carbon dioxide.

Pence made the remarks during an energy
summit in suburban Pittsburgh
yesterday.

Today’s event in Indianapolis is scheduled
for 10 a.m. to noon at the Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St. Along with
Pence will be fellow Republican representatives Dan Burton and Steve Buyer of
Indiana, Fred Upton of Michigan and Bob Latta of Ohio. Indiana Gov. Mitch
Daniels also is expected to attend.

Another summit will be held  tomorrow in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
