The city of Lafayette plans to demolish 76-year-old Loeb Stadium and build a multipurpose facility at the same location.

The city has signed an initial agreement to have Indianapolis-based American Structurepoint design the new stadium. That's the same architecture firm that designed the new stadium in Kokomo, The Journal & Courier reported.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski says he expects the cost to be about $10 million and for it to be completed by 2019. Demolition of the current 3,500-seat stadium likely wouldn't begin until after the 2017 Colt World Series.

It's currently the home field for Lafayette Aviators of the Prospect League.

The new facility likely will contain synthetic turf so it can be used for multiple sports.

Originally called the Columbian Park Recreational Center, the existing facility was officially renamed as Loeb Stadium in 1971.

The stadium was home to the semi-pro Lafayette Chiefs of Mississippi-Ohio Valley League in 1955) and the Minor League Lafayette Red Sox of the Midwest League from 1956-57.
