  1. Gaskill, it should be said, is lying.

    “I want you to stop and think for just a minute of how different things would be in Minnesota if that state would simply let the ICE On social media, in press releases, and in public statements by its leaders, the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been implying that ICE’s street-level sweeps have netted criminals they call the “worst of the worst” — and that Minnesota has been protecting those people from capture.

    =====

    Every few days since Operation Metro Surge began, DHS has released lists of people it says have been arrested.

    MPR News examined one of the lists shared by DHS officials on Monday, Jan. 12 and found that most of the people on the list had been immediately transferred to ICE custody at the end of time served in Minnesota prisons.

    All of those transfers happened before ICE began its surge of operations in Minnesota on Dec. 1, 2025, with some even happening years before.

    DHS has also accused Minnesota prisons of not cooperating with immigration enforcement. But the department said it coordinated with ICE on the release of 84 prisoners last year, several of whom have shown up on DHS “worst of the worst” lists.

    “We are part of the overall criminal justice system and our statutory obligation is to provide support, including to ICE and notification to ICE and we do that,” said Minnesota Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell.

    https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/01/17/ice-takes-credit-for-some-criminals-that-were-already-in-minnesota-prisons

    1. On top of all the issues with ICE … sub-standard hires trained in a hurry, maybe that’s why they wear masks … a budget that’s larger than the Marines … for some odd reason, rather than go to Texas and Florida which have literal millions of undocumented immigrants, ICE decided to head to Minnesota in the dead of winter … which, comparatively, has very few. That’s just poor planning. Of course, with even the governor of Texas saying that Trump needs to “recalibrate”, maybe his state will be the next target.

      Republicans prioritized funding ICE instead of all the other things they took out of their last budget, all the while claiming they were serious about wasteful government spending. All they’ve shown in Minnesota is that turning immigration enforcement into a military operation is not what people voted for, and it’s a waste of money to boot. They could have properly funded immigration courts with a fraction of that money and got better results.

    2. The bottom line is, ICE activity in Minnesota really has nothing to do with immigration enforcement, and is therefore irrelevant in the debate over the pros or cons of this Indiana legislation. Minnesota has been an intentional show of thuggish, fascist force in a blue area, not legitimate immigration enforcement. There is no level of state immigration cooperation that would have prevented the un-American, lawless behavior by violent federal stormtroopers there. This legislation will not save Indiana from federal invasion (but being a red state, we are not really in danger at the moment… just ask the folks in Texas or Florida, which have far more immigrants than Minnesota does, and yet have been spared the federal brutality).

  2. Unvetted, poorly trained, trigger-happy anyones off the street have been hired by ICE.
    While one can agree that people without authorization should not be living in the United State, one can also argue that they should be treated with respect and dignity in deportation. The Obama administration deported thousands of people without authorization and without murders. Whereas this administration showcases threats and intimidation — yes, some statehouse legislators know about that — in a massive and deadly bit of political theatre. Yes, sit on your high horses in the Statehouse with this bill but bear in mind this leader is the same individual that presided over the deadly violent attempted coup d’état of January 6, 2021, did nothing the quell the violence as commander-in-chief, and heretofore has refused to allow a comparative plaque for those Capitol Police offices murdered by the violent, destructive massive mob that broke into and ransacked the Capitol which legislators were sequestered in safe quarters.

    Yes, orderly cooperation is understood. But an orderly plan should have been devised before an unfit, untrained group of armed SS-like government sanctioned special police began a politically-motivated assault on Minneapolis. Over 10% of ICE agents descended on a place with 0.9% of alleged illegal residents. Why is there not a comparably focused ICE effort in Texas and Florida where a much larger number of illegal residents exist? So everyday people still seek cheap day labor in Texas cities of inidividuals without a right to live and work in the US. Construction crews in Texas include many who work for low wages and are without legal right to work in the US. Why not a focused ICE effort on illegal residents from Europe?

    Of course, the greater need is a plan to fairly assess those seeking to immigrate. More facilities and more courts to ensure those deemed fit should remain. Quite honestly, many immigrants have populated once dilapidated neighborhoods, improved housing, open restaurants and businesses, and provide support in industries sorely lacking in employees such as senior care, maintenance, and factories which, apparently, many un- or underemployed bona-fide US citizen do not wish to do. They pay social security and income taxes and due to their status will not receive anything from it. So, to ensure this great nation remain solvent for the long-term, US citizens need to reproduce or perhaps the administration will seek greater immigration from Europe or ares deemed to be appropriate.

  3. Give people guns, pepper spray, handcuffs and night sticks then tell them they have absolute immunity (as Steven Miller has said) and you are going to have the brutilization and death of protestors. This bill and its sponsor are simply appealing to the MEGA faction in Indiana. It has nothing to do with resonable immigration legislation. The right is living a lie when they claim that citizens and those here legally have nothing to fear. Just ask the two American citizens shot to death and the countless citizens and legal immigrants who have been detained by ICE and in many cases beaten or harassed. This is not what the American people voted for when they wanted immigration reform.
