Indianapolis-based email marketing company Delivra Inc., which is used by about 200 local companies to send mass emails, said service problems Tuesday and Wednesday stemmed from issues with its data center provider, Expedient Data Centers.

Delivra CEO Neil Berman said his company was made aware that some clients, including IBJ Media Corp., were having trouble delivering emails Tuesday afternoon. Berman said clients could log on, create and send emails, "but our data center was experiencing a slowness in delivery of emails."

That slowness turned out to be a major delay in some cases. One of IBJ's newsletters, for instance, reached some subscribers' inboxes 16 hours after being sent.

In a Wednesday morning interview, Berman said he wasn't sure of the root cause at that moment, but said Expedient was switching to new equipment and expected the issues to be resolved by late Wednesday morning.

"They've been a partner of ours for many, many years, and they've been very reliable and responsive," Berman said. "And this has been an anomaly, certainly, in our experience with them. I'm hoping the air will clear as soon as possible."

Messages left for Expedient officials were not immediately returned. The Pittsburgh-based company has data centers in six cities, including Indianapolis.

Some of Delivra's local customers include the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, not-for-profit group TechPoint, the Indianapolis Zoo, Red Gold Inc., the NCAA and entrepreneurial content and events firm Verge.

The full extent of the problem wasn't clear as some clients, including Verge, hadn't sent mass emails over the past two days. Berman said 11 companies contacted Delivra about service issues.

Some clients have sent emails in that span with no problems. TechPoint, for instance, delivered its flagship newsletter Tuesday and its "Talent Network" newsletter Wednesday as scheduled.

"We proudly have Delivra at the bottom of our emails and choose to support an Indy company," TechPoint spokeswoman Sara Croft said. "But I can't say that we've had any issues."

Delivra, founded in 1999, sends out hundreds of millions of emails per month, Berman said.
