Another upscale downtown restaurant is closing at the end of the year.

The owners of Chef Joseph’s at the Connoisseur Room announced late Wednesday afternoon that they will shut the doors on Dec. 31, after more than six years in business.

Chef Joseph’s at 115 E. Ohio St. joins the Alexander Hotel’s Cerulean as the latest fine-dining casualty.

John Mays and Tom Forman said their decision to shut Chef Joseph’s is prompted by executive chef Joseph Heidenreich’s retirement.

“We are proud to have achieved our goal of bringing a little bit of New York City to Indianapolis,” Mays said in a press release. “We will miss the evenings of fantastic local music that were shared with our guests, many of whom have become friends and family.”

In Indianapolis, Heidenreich led the kitchens of California Café and Agio before helping to launch Chef Joseph’s.

All reservations and private events through December 31 will be honored, the owners said.

Cerulean owner Caleb France announced Dec. 1 that the restaurant would close at the end of the month, after a five-year run. But it didn’t take long for the Alexander hotel to find a replacement.

On Dec. 11, local restaurateur Mike Cunningham, owner of Indianapolis-based Cunningham Restaurant Group, told IBJ that his “coastal Italian concept” will be heavy on seafood but serve steak as well.

No name has been selected yet, Cunningham said, but he’s hoping to open in late April or early May.
