Good to know school funding in IN is based solely on the personal experience and agenda of one legislator, with one school, and one teacher. Heck of a sample size.
Assuredly bullying NEVER takes place in public schools?
We continue to expand vouchers and charter schools. What percent of charters have failed? That number is way out of line as no seeming oversight of these charters. Plus, the charters are destroying public education which is a basic right and need of our residents. We cannot keep taking money away from public schools, and then say they have problems. Lets focus on the basics.
James, I agree completely. The legislature appears to be focused on destroying rather than improving public education. That’s why they regularly pass laws favoring charter schools while requiring little or no oversight. And don’t forget that many of these private schools raking in our tax dollars are religious schools that are indoctrinating our children into a specific, exclusionary world view.
Oh good grief!! Religious schools teaching children that there is a higher power
other than themselves and the government. Teaching that there is free will
through faith and redemption instead of compliant leftwing dogma.
Oh the horror of it all.
Religious schools that teach faith, hardwork, self reliance and perseverance through faith
instead of relying on government handouts and dependency.
Yet over the past 20 years, religious schools themselves have gone from being self-reliant to acting like they’re entitled to taxpayer dollars, no strings attached.
If private schools receive public money, why aren’t they subject to open records and open meetings laws, State Board of Account audits, public input on advertised budgets, and school board members elected by the public -at least in proportions to the amount of their budget dependent on voucher funds?
Why are parochial school still allowed to give enrollment preference to children in their own church congregations when all other taxpayers’ children don’t have an equal chance for enrollment?
Why should a private school with $14,000 to $20,000 per student tuition have a right to receive thousands more per student in taxpayer funds AT THE EXPENSE of nearby public schools which have $7500 per student?
If parochial schools permit no public inspection or public audits or publication of their budgets, how do we know whether voucher funds are going to instruction OR are subsidizing the church budget for non-instructional purposes?
Public transparency and accountabillity are the best disinfectants. It’s time parochial schools opened their books, permitted public audits, advertised their budgets, invited public input and regularly reported to the taxpayers who are paying so much of their freight. It’s the right thing to do. Isn’t that what they teach their students to do?
