I’m betting [pun intended] the horse tracks and race-horse industry will be lobbying against this…unless they get a substantial piece of the action.
The race horse industry is broke compared to the casino industry.
28-year resident of downtown here. I know the warm glow of that sweet, sweet tax revenue is hard to resist, but we’re not Detroit or Cincy in need of an economic life-line.
If downtown is going to get some dumpy casino that creates an island that visitors don’t leave and brings in degenerate gamblers, then a lot of the tax revenue better be earmarked to go directly back into Indianapolis. If it comes to pass, I’m looking at your Freeman, Moed, and Taylor to make sure the city explicitly reaps the benefits.
Alternatively, Chris Gahl and the executive committee can try harder to make the city appealing to visitors, conventioneers, AND residents without a bolt-on casino. Or maybe the plan is to create future casino revenue by introducing FFA kids to slot machines and card games?
They’re still selling groups on how it’s not a negative and they’re coming out to advocate for it?
“…Visit Indy will do continued due diligence with both existing customers and prospective customers on their feelings and attitudes toward a downtown casino.”
Whole statement sounds like it was forced and all of our conventions still aren’t on board?
“Our expectation is the project’s quality of experience and specific location will align with the best interests of our major convention and event customers and stakeholders.”
So they know where it’s going and if it’s not there, they’re not as supportive?
I’d like to know why this is being rushed during maybe the shortest “short session” for the Legislature in some time.
Gambling is fundamentally evil and this will attract organized crime to downtown Indianapolis. Who is twisting their arms on this?
It all makes sense to me! And glad to hear the Indy committee vote to chase it!
Well of course they want it. But that doesn’t mean a casino is best for downtown.
Shame on the Visit Indy leadership. A casino is NOT what Indianapolis needs and would NOT benefit the city long term.
Take a good look outside of the Winner’s Circle, the “most unique social gambling experience” in downtown. What you’ll see is a microcosm of a full scale casino. Downtown does not need a Winner’s Circle on steroids.
