Skating academy to close ice rinks at Pan Am Plaza

Indiana World Skating Academy, a fixture in downtown Indianapolis since 1987, plans to suspend operations of its two indoor ice rinks at Pan Am Plaza this month and begin looking for a new location, the not-for-profit announced Wednesday.

Masked man holds up local hotel

The Quality Inn and Suites in the 5000 block of Lafayette Road was robbed at gunpoint by a masked man at about 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Indianapolis police say. A front desk worker said the man forced her to give him $200 from a register and her mobile phone. Investigators say camera footage shows the suspect driving away northbound on Lafayette Road in a compact car.

Murder suspect shoots himself in head

After a standoff at a Lawrence hotel that lasted nearly six hours, a murder suspect was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday night with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police cornered 41-year-old Brian Fegley about noon at the Value Place Hotel near 82nd and Shadeland Avenue. Fegley was accused of a shooting that killed Eli McAfee, 33, at the Free Spirit Lounge in Castleton earlier in the day.

Cops to valets: Park cars, not traffic

Indianapolis police are keeping an eye on downtown valets, whose habit of blocking traffic lanes has prompted complaints. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department issued a stern reminder to all valet operators on Jan. 31, the week after the opening of The Alexander Hotel in CityWay at Delaware and South streets.

Ballard plans new redevelopment effort for Market Square site

Mayor Greg Ballard, in his annual State of the City speech scheduled for Friday, plans to call for new proposals for the downtown site that previously was home to Market Square Arena. The city expects the proposals to include a high-rise building with a major retail component.
