No jail time for ex-Carmel player

November 5, 2010

A former Carmel High School basketball player charged in a sexual assault case will see no jail time. A plea deal means Scott Laskowski will see the charges against him reduced from three counts of misdemeanor criminal recklessness to one charge. He must also testify against three of his former teammates, who still face charges in the case. As part of the deal, he will serve one year probation and perform 40 hours of community service.
 

Ex-Carmel player expected to change plea

November 4, 2010

A former Carmel High School basketball player accused of attacking a young student is expected to change his plea to guilty when he appears in court Thursday. Scott Laskowski was charged in May with three misdemeanor counts of criminal recklessness. The maximum sentence for each charge would be 180 days in prison, however, most first-time offenders don't end up doing jail time.

Teen in fatal Carmel chase avoids jail

Spencer Beasley, 15, who led police on a chase last April that killed two of his friends, was sentenced to one year of probation
and 100 hours of community service Tuesday by a Carmel juvenile court judge. The teen pleaded guilty to two counts of resisting
law enforcement with a vehicle, causing death. Jordan Moss and Jordan Piorier died in the fiery crash at 146th Street and
River Road last April after Beasley fled from police in Carmel. Beasley won’t be allowed a driver’s license until he’s 18.

Carmel Clay teachers OK contract

The teachers union at Carmel Clay Schools has ratified a proposed contract. Members voted 228-70 Wednesday night to approve
the agreement with the 15,000-student district. The teachers had been working under terms of an expired contract since July
2008. Union President Sherri Pankratz said she wouldn't disclose details of the contract until the school board approves
it. The board plans to meet Thursday night.

Carmel fire follows possible gunshot

Firefighters were called Wednesday morning to a home in Carmel on Santa Anita Court that was engulfed in flames. Officials
on the scene said that a resident had shot and killed himself inside, and that the fire started afterward. Neighbors said
they heard an explosion, which investors believe may have been the gunshot. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.
 

Lawyers argue for gag order in Carmel case

A judge will hear arguments this afternoon to put a gag order in place in a high-profile Carmel assault case. Lawyers for
a former senior member of the Carmel High School basketball team accused of assaulting a freshman teammate will argue for
the order. The defendants want to limit comments made by everyone involved in the case, including lawyers, investigators,
court employees and police. Four members of the team are charged with misdemeanor offenses in the case. Legal analysts say
it's highly unusual for a gag order to be requested in a misdemeanor case.
