A new option for feeding parking meters is coming to Indianapolis. Called ParkMobile, the service will allow people to use their mobile phone to pay for parking. ParkIndy is expected to unveil details of the plan sometime on Thursday. The system will require registration of a credit card and the download of software.
An Indianapolis man has been arrested and is being held in Arizona on six federal counts of causing bodily injury to children under his care. Christopher Carlson is accused of forcing his grandsons, ages 12, 9 and 8, to hike miles through Grand Canyon National Park without food or water from sunrise to sunset. In one trip, the group hiked nearly 20 miles in 108-degree temperatures. According to the arrest report, the boys had ulcerated blisters on their feet, sunburn, cracked lips and could barely stand, but were beaten by Carlson when they stopped hiking.
A Thursday morning fire destroyed one home and damaged two others on the southwest side of Indianapolis, displacing three families. The blaze, in the 3000 block of Everbloom Way in the Bayberry subdivision, broke out about 1:45 a.m. One person was slightly injured and treated at the scene. Fire investigators estimated a loss at the destroyed home of $150,000. The other two homes suffered an estimated $75,000 and $10,000 in damages. A cause is being investigated.

Two men arrested Tuesday were charged Wednesday in connection with the shooting of an Indianapolis police officer. Eugenio Gonzalez-Ramirez, 18, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery, carjacking, carrying a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana. Police say Gonzalez shot Officer Dustin Carmack last Friday night outside a liquor store at Michigan Street and Tibbs Avenue. Johnny Taboada-Perez, 22, was charged with assisting a criminal, possession of marijuana and affiliation with a criminal gang.
Police say a 30-year old man who died Wednesday morning in a pickup truck crash may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Steven L. Johnson II, 30, of Indianapolis may have been traveling as fast as 80 mph when his truck left East 21st Street about 3 a.m. in front of Lakeside Elementary School. The pickup went off the road and traveled along a ditch until it slammed into a concrete support at the entrance of the school. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Two people pursued by police died Tuesday night after they were ejected from a sport-utility vehicle near Kessler Boulevard and Lafayette Road in Indianapolis. Police say the maroon SUV, which had been reported as stolen, was stopped by an officer about 9:45 p.m., but took off southbound on Kessler. It crashed while trying to pass another vehicle. Neighbors said the SUV flipped over at least six times before it stopped in the front yard of a residence. The two men died at the scene.
