Bill would crack down on convenience store safety

Stores with crime problems that wanted to remain open overnight would have to do one of the following: have two employees working, install a bulletproof enclosure, have a security guard or conduct business through a pass-through trough.

Probe finds no problems with plane

December 6, 2012

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board say they have found no mechanical problems in the single-engine plane that crashed in Greensburg Sunday night, killing four people. The NTSB said the Piper Malibu had fuel and appeared to be working well mechanically before plunging into a field. The pilot, Don Horan, had accumulated a total of nearly 400 hours of flying time. Horan’s wife, Barbara, also died in the crash along with family friends Stephen and Denise Butz.
 

Fire hits 3 homes in Plainfield

December 6, 2012

An early-morning fire destroyed one house and damaged two others in Plainfield in the Bentwood neighborhood near U.S. 40 and Rockville Road. The fire broke out in an unoccupied house before 3:30 a.m. Residents in the neighboring homes escaped without injury. One of those houses suffered minor damage, but the fire burned through the wall of the other dwelling. The cause is under investigation.
 

Hite to be named police chief

December 6, 2012

Rick Hite, acting leader of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department since April, will be named chief Thursday afternoon, the mayor’s office said. Hite was elevated to interim chief following the demotion of Paul Ciesielski. Hite was a 30-year veteran of the Baltimore police department before being named deputy director of public safety in Indianapolis in 2010.
 

Gas leaks force 29 from central Indiana apartments

Authorities have ordered the 29 residents of an Anderson apartment complex to leave their homes until gas leaks found in all five of its buildings can be repaired.

Greenwood rejects feeding ban

Greenwood city leaders say they'll look for other ways to discourage coyotes from roaming neighborhoods after a proposed ban on feeding stray and wild animals was rejected. Greenwood City Councilman Tim McLaughlin said the city will talk with coyote experts after the council voted 6-3 this week against the proposed ban on leaving food outdoors. The proposal followed numerous reports of coyote attacks on family pets in recent months.

Noblesville crash injures two

A Duke Energy truck and a car collided head-on Wednesday morning in Noblesville, leaving two people injured. The accident happened just after 8:30 a.m. on Indiana 19 near Forest Park. The car’s driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening. The truck’s driver was treated at the scene and released.

Two arrested in deadly shooting

December 5, 2012

Indianapolis homicide detectives arrested two people Tuesday in connection with a November homicide and aggravated assault, and they’re looking for three more people. Carlton Hart, 44, and Dontee Robinson, 20, were taken into custody in connection with the murder of 22-year-old Thomas Keys and the aggravated assault of 26-year-old Marvin Finney. The men were shot outside a recording studio in the 2000 block of East 46th Street about 8 p.m. Nov. 15. Police also are seeking Dominique Hamler, 20, James McDuffy, 29, and  Nathaniel Armstrong, 20, in connection with the crime.
