Lilly says experimental diabetes drug outperformed rivals

Eli Lilly and Co. said dulaglutide lowered blood sugar better than three existing diabetes drugs in three Phase 3 clinical trials. Analysts expect the drug to hit the market in 2014 or 2015 and become a blockbuster.

Smoke Shop owner faces charges

An Indianapolis smoke shop owner has been charged with 18 felonies for allegedly selling the synthetic drug known as “spice,” which was outlawed this year by Indiana legislators. Investigators say they seized more than 1,000 packages of the substance at three locations of the Smoke Shop, which is owned by Christopher Tiplick. Tiplick had an initial hearing in Marion County Superior Court on Friday and will return to court in February.
 

Dad arrested after throwing infant

A Johnson County man is in jail after admitting that he threw his 6-week-old daughter because she wouldn't stop crying. Bradley Eddleman, 23, was charged with one count of aggravated battery and one count of child neglect, and is being held in the Johnson County Jail. Eddleman told police he grew frustrated with his daughter, Riley, while watching her in their Edinburgh home and threw her across the living room to the couch, where she hit her head on a wooden arm rest. After her mother discovered the injury, the baby was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The baby suffered a skull fracture and may have permanent brain damage.
 

Hotel damaged by fire

A fire caused about $40,000 in damage to a hotel Thursday night on the far-east side of Indianapolis. The blaze broke out at about 11:30 p.m. in a laundry room at Country Hearth Inn in the 8800 block of East 21st Street, near North Post Road. Three people staying in the section of the building where the fire broke out escaped without injury.
 

Indiana sheds jobs but unemployment rate falls

Indiana’s unemployment rate fell to 8.2 percent in September, the first decline for the rate since April, despite a loss of 6,000 private-sector jobs.

Paoli Peaks wins big in battle with landlord over logging

The owners of the Paoli Peaks ski resort have prevailed in a battle with their landlord, who had sought to squeeze additional revenue out of the 68-acre property by launching a logging operation.
