Driver charged after crash injures passenger

March 19, 2012

A 23-year-old man was arrested Monday after police said he ran a red light and crashed Sunday night on the northwest side of Indianapolis, critically injuring his passenger. Marcos Antonio-Tomas was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury.  Investigators said Antonio-Tomas was traveling northbound on Moller Road when he ran the red light at 34th Street, swerved to miss another vehicle, lost control and struck a utility pole. Zacarias Antonio, 23, was taken to Wishard Hospital with chest injuries.
 

Police seek suspect in canal shootings

March 19, 2012

Indianapolis police have identified a person of interest in a shooting that injured five teenagers Saturday night near downtown’s Central Canal. Police Chief Paul Ciesielski said they are searching for a 16-year-old who may have been involved. Five teens ranging in age from 14 to 17 were shot just after 10 p.m. near the Indiana History Center on the west bank of the Canal, between Ohio and New York streets. Three of the victims were treated and released from the hospital, but two remain hospitalized with serious injuries. An argument may have led to the shooting, but at least two of the victims were bystanders.

Girl improving after lightning strike

A southern Indiana high school freshman is on the mend after being struck by lightning Thursday afternoon as she and other members of a softball team were practicing outside Seymour High School. Emily Bobb was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis in critical condition but has been upgraded to good condition. Three other girls taken to a Seymour hospital were released Thursday evening. Witnesses said skies were clear at the time of the lightening strike.

Student shot at city park

March 16, 2012

A Pike High School student was shot in the foot at a northwest-side park Thursday, prompting recreational activities to be relocated to another park. The victim, an 18-year-old senior, was on the basketball court at Northwestway Park at about 7:15 p.m. when shots rang out. He told police two people exchanged multiple shots at each other. He dove to the ground for cover and was struck in the foot. Police said the shooting appears to be gang- related and an isolated incident. Numerous soccer events scheduled for Friday have been moved to Mary & John Geisse Soccer Complex at West 56th Street and Reed Road.
