Fire hits three city homes

September 1, 2011

A Thursday morning fire destroyed one home and damaged two others on the southwest side of Indianapolis, displacing three families. The blaze, in the 3000 block of Everbloom Way in the Bayberry subdivision, broke out about 1:45 a.m. One person was slightly injured and treated at the scene. Fire investigators estimated a loss at the destroyed home of $150,000. The other two homes suffered an estimated $75,000 and $10,000 in damages. A cause is being investigated.

Former auction house owner Dean V. Kruse has been released on bond after surrendering to face a theft charge out of Pennsylvania alleging that he never paid a man $38,000 for selling an antique hearse.

Mellencamp songwriter dies at 59

Songwriter George Green, who wrote lyrics for some of John Mellencamp's biggest hits, has died at age 59 of lung cancer. Green, a boyhood friend of Mellencamp in Seymour, co-wrote 1980s hits "Hurts So Good," ''Crumblin' Down," and "Rain on the Scarecrow." He also wrote songs for Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Williams, Hall & Oates and Ricky Skaggs.
 

Two arrested in shooting of officer

Two men arrested Tuesday were charged Wednesday in connection with the shooting of an Indianapolis police officer. Eugenio Gonzalez-Ramirez, 18, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery, carjacking, carrying a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana. Police say Gonzalez shot Officer Dustin Carmack last Friday night outside a liquor store at Michigan Street and Tibbs Avenue. Johnny Taboada-Perez, 22, was charged with assisting a criminal, possession of marijuana and affiliation with a criminal gang.
 

Pickup crash kills local man

August 31, 2011

Police say a 30-year old man who died Wednesday morning in a pickup truck crash may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Steven L. Johnson II, 30, of Indianapolis may have been traveling as fast as 80 mph when his truck left East 21st Street about 3 a.m. in front of Lakeside Elementary School. The pickup went off the road and traveled along a ditch until it slammed into a concrete support at the entrance of the school. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
 

Two die in police chase

August 31, 2011

Two people pursued by police died Tuesday night after they were ejected from a sport-utility vehicle near Kessler Boulevard and Lafayette Road in Indianapolis. Police say the maroon SUV, which had been reported as stolen, was stopped by an officer about 9:45 p.m., but took off southbound on Kessler. It crashed while trying to pass another vehicle. Neighbors said the SUV flipped over at least six times before it stopped in the front yard of a residence. The two men died at the scene.
