An off-duty Indianapolis police officer opened fire outside Castleton Christian Church on Sunday morning, shooting at a vehicle
he said tried to run him over. A witness called 911 after seeing three men using a crow bar to gain entry to a van. When Detective
James Carver tried to stop them, he said they jumped into their vehicle and swerved in his direction. He said he fired his
weapon in self defense. Police say one of the suspects may have been hit by a bullet. Investigators are still looking for
the suspects’ car, a white four-door Chrysler with chrome wheels and dark tinted windows.

A woman accused of running over her boyfriend with his own car has surrendered to police. Police said Chanel Garrett hit Michael
Powell with his SUV during an argument on Sunday. Garrett allegedly pulled away, then backed up and struck Powell, dragging
him nearly 40 feet onto the sidewalk near the intersection of 40th Street and Park Avenue. Powell was treated at Wishard Hospital.
Garrett is charged with battery.

Metro police continue to search for two people accused of killing a south-side Village Pantry clerk early Saturday morning.
Employee Becky Hough was shot to death during a robbery at the store on South Meridian and Arizona streets. She had worked
at the convenience store for more than two decades.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Judge David Hamilton 59-39 on Thursday for a seat on the Chicago-based Seventh Circuit Court of
Appeals. Hamilton currently sits on Indiana’s Federal District Court. Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar was the only Republican to support
his confirmation. Hamilton was President Obama’s first judicial nominee.

Emergency room visits and school absences related to the H1N1 virus are down in recent weeks, but state health care officials
say they’re bracing for a third wave of the flu this winter. Six people died last week in Indiana from apparent H1N1 complications.
That brings the H1N1 flu-related death toll in the state to 30 this year.

In Lawrence Township, district officials are considering several options to trim more than $3 million from the budget. One
idea includes closing a middle school, moving sixth-graders to elementary schools and restructuring junior highs. The school
board will discuss the proposal at its next meeting Monday night at Lawrence North High School.
