Duke considers taking carbon dioxide underground

Duke Energy has proposed spending $121 million to study the feasibility of injecting carbon dioxide deep underground, adding
1 percent to the average ratepayer’s bill between 2010 and 2013.

New restaurants planning to open this month

New restaurants include Iozzo’s Garden of Italy, slated to open July 17 at 946 S. Meridian St.,
in the former home of Leland’s and Cafe@Ray. The owner’s grandfather in the 1940s owned an
800-seat restaurant of the same name where the Hyatt Regency now stands.

Damar Services scores land, ends fund-raising campaign

Conseco reinsurance deal swaps profits for cash

July 10, 2009

Carmel-based Conseco Inc., still a bit strapped for cash, brought in a reinsurance company to shoulder some of the risk
of its life insurance policies. Minnesota-based Wilton Reassurance Co. will pay $57.5 million to Conseco as a ceding
commission to co-insure and administer 104,000 policies held by Conseco subsidiaries.

Emmis Communications Corp. reported a quarterly profit today after buying back a big chunk of its own debt on the cheap, but the outlook for the company remains grim. Endocyte, Purdue develop prostate cancer treatment device

Purdue University researcher Philip Low, also the chief science officer for West Lafayette-based Endocyte Inc., has developed
a prostate cancer “homing device” to help anti-cancer agents specifically target prostate
cancer tumors.

MainGate takes on Vikings

Indianapolis-based merchandiser MainGate Inc. continues scoring deals with National Football League teams.
On July 7, company officials announced they had signed a 10-year deal to be the exclusive retail and merchandising company
for the Minnesota Vikings.

Gannett cuts cost 37 Star employees their jobs

July 10, 2009

Thirty-seven people were laid off at the Indianapolis Star yesterday and today as part of Virginia-based parent Gannett
Co. Inc.’s attempt to grapple with the swooning economy and falling advertising revenue. Seventeen of those laid off were
in the newsroom of the state’s largest daily newspaper, including seven editors, which constitutes one-fourth of the
editorial management team.

EDITORIAL: School funding has fatal flaws

A state budget was passed June 30, but it’s balanced on the backs of poor children. Legislators
deserve praise for at least slightly increasing overall education funding, but because of a flawed funding
formula, urban districts such as Indianapolis Public Schools actually will lose money in the next two
years.

Construction jobs trickling in from road stimulus

Federal stimulus money for Indiana highway projects so far has put to work 1,222 people with a payroll of $1.27 million,
according to state records of 42 projects under way in which contractors have reported job data. The work, ranging
from paving to replacing bridge decks, had a total contract value of $39.2 million.

Kite Realty misses out on REIT revival

Kite Realty Group Trust has stuck pretty closely to the REIT recession playbook: Renegotiate debt, sell new shares, cut
dividends, and set the development engine to idle. But as the shares of most publicly traded real estate
investment trusts have bounced back from the lows in March, Kite’s shares have lagged.
