Indianapolis TV news market attains rare double honor: Local affiliates think hefty investment in investigative journalism will pay off with higher viewer ratings

April 23, 2007

For the first time, two Indianapolis television stations nabbed coveted Peabody Awards-among the highest honor given for TV productions worldwide-in the same year. WTHR-TV Channel 13 and WISH-TV Channel 8 were notified of their awards this month and will accept them June 4 at a ceremony in New York City. The Peabody certainly polishes the image of both stations, but it’s less clear how it will affect the bottom line of WISH or WTHR. The Peabody has been presented by…

INVESTING: Don’t plunge into the market rally, but buy in the dips

April 23, 2007

Americans spend a ton of money on health care. (The fact that most of that money is not their own is the leading problem with our health care system.) You would think that, with all the spending, pharmaceutical stocks would be a gold mine. Even though the sector has been the leading performer over the last 100 years, good drug stocks have been hard to find so far this century. But eight years after hitting their peaks, something might be…

Broadbent’s new era: Veteran real estate firm known for strip centers prepares for new headquarters, new leadership

April 23, 2007

The distinctive black-and-white façade of the Zipper Building at Washington Street and Virginia Avenue is gone, stripped away like ceiling tiles from an old bedroom. Replacing the unusual exterior of the three-story structure will be a more traditional brick and stone look-and a new moniker bearing the name of owner The Broadbent Co. Broadbent, the longtime developer of retail strip centers including Castleton Plaza, Clearwater Crossing and Fashion Mall Commons bought the downtown building last October and is set to…

DOING GOOD: LINDSAY CORNELIUS: MBA student emerging as philanthropic leader

April 23, 2007

DOING GOOD LINDSAY CORNELIUS MBA student emerging as philanthropic leader To hear Lindsay Cornelius tell it, Indianapolis is the best place to live: It’s a growing city, with terrific new restaurants, fabulous art galleries, great parks, excellent museums, hip clubs and a booming downtown. But like any major metropoli tan area, it has its problems. And that has Cornelius, 26, determined to be among the legions of young men and women who care deeply about things like quality schools and…

VIEWPOINT: Save yourself, and start sooner!

April 23, 2007

This is my first sermon for the newly minted “Church of Savin-tology.” I don’t care about saving your soul, I just want you to be a better saver of your hard-earned income. Our version of the golden rule says: He who saves his gold, rules in retirement. We live in a consumer-driven society that constantly challenges us to keep up with our neighbors. We are bombarded with pressures to buy the biggest house we can afford and furnish it appropriately….

FBI’s project bid puzzles local developers

April 23, 2007

Some local developers were left scratching their heads last month when the federal government chose an out-of-state company
to develop an FBI field office in Castleton. The U.S. General Services Administration awarded the $38 million project to Lake
Winnebago Mo.-based BC Development Co.

City buildings save money while gaining ‘Star’ status: EPA program gives tax breaks for energy efficiency

April 23, 2007

Thomson Inc. building, 10330 N. Meridian St. In 2006 alone, the EPA awarded more than 3,400 buildings nationwide with the Energy Star designation. Buildings can achieve the status by adopting an energy-management strategy and tracking the results during a 12-month period using an EPA rating system. Results need to be verified by a professional engineer. All Energy Star products qualify for a tax credit. A deduction of up to $1.80 a square foot is available to owners and designers of…

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Key issues all entangled as Legislature heads to wire

April 23, 2007

Longtime readers of this column will recall how we traditionally analogize conference committee time to the NBA playoffs, and compare some of the legislative players to Indiana Pacers great Reggie Miller in the closing minutes of a finals game. With Reggie retired and the Pacers out of the playoff picture this year, those analogies don’t seem quite so appropriate. But we still can talk some hoops. A sage Hoosier native, speaking about a tradition sacred to generations of Hoosiers, once…

ATA parent sees potential in World Air, despite its woes: Impact of deal on Indianapolis headquarters unknown

April 23, 2007

The biggest acquisition in the 34-year history of ATA Airlines will steer it closer to its charter roots and further from a scheduled-service binge that led to bankruptcy three years ago. Analysts say the $315 million deal to buy Atlanta-based World Air Holdings will broaden the revenue base and bring economies of scale for ATA’s newly renamed parent, Global Aero Logistics. It also hands ATA a cargo business worth $100 million in 2005. The deal should give the Manhattan vulture…

BULLS & BEARS: SEC faces difficult task fighting insider trading

April 23, 2007

In the second episode of the excellent trilogy “Back to the Future,” Biff Tannen obtains a magazine that gives the final scores of yet-to-beplayed sporting events. He uses that information to “gamble” his way to wealth. Similarly, haven’t we all wistfully wondered what we would do if we only had a copy of tomorrow’s Wall Street Journal today? Well, occasionally some people do obtain that kind of advantage in the securities markets. One former Securities and Exchange Commission attorney noted…

SPORTS: Bad news no surprise in our ‘anything goes’ world

April 23, 2007

I considered the notion for a moment and conceded, “You may be right.” After all, shock-jock Imus had made a career of offering insensitive, crude and sometimes race-based insults (he once referred to New York Knicks’ star Patrick Ewing as a “knuckle-dragging moron”). But when he offered his unconscionable take on the women of the Rutgers University basketball team, his primary mistake was timing. His comments came at the wrong time in the media cycle. There was a vacuum, and…

Ivy Tech boasts healthy enrollment, but most students wither on vine

April 23, 2007

Ivy Tech Community College–charged with cranking out workers to fill high-demand jobs in critical occupations–has an output
rate reminiscent of an old, state-owned Soviet assembly line. Incoming President Thomas Snyder is taking over a community
college system that graduates only 12 percent of its students within three years.

What you crave

April 20, 2007

Never fear, White Castle fans. The downtown location at 16th and Illinois streets, which is closed and surrounded by a fence, apparently will soon serve sliders again in a shiny new White Castle building with nicer landscaping. Changes are coming…

Hat World, which has more than 700 locations, accounted for about 23 percent of Genesco’s $1.46 billion in sales in […]

People living downtown won’t have to wait for a proposed Target to go home shopping closer to home. Carson Pirie Scott is renovating 25,000 square feet of its space on the third floor of Circle Centre mall for a new…

BREAKING: Foot Locker bids for Hat World parent

April 20, 2007

New York-based Foot Locker Inc. this morning offered to buy Tennessee-based Genesco Inc. for $1.2 billion—a deal apparently driven by Foot Locker’s desire to gain ownership of Genesco’s Indianapolis-based Hat World unit. Talk of a possible deal has been brewing for weeks. Women’s Wear Daily reported last month that Foot Locker planned to open its […]

The $560 million transmission plant Tipton-area residents hope to lure to their city north of Hamilton County would make units for a minivan Chrysler plans to roll out for the 2010 model year, according to the Kokomo Tribune. Production of Getrag transmission production would begin in February 2009, with an anticipated annual rate of 400,000 […]

Angola manufacturer to expand, add 100 positions.

April 20, 2007

Vestil Manufacturing Co., which makes industrial materials handling equipment in the northeastern Indiana city of Angola, will boost its work force nearly 50 percent, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said today. The addition of 104 jobs comes through an $8.2 million investment supported with $2.2 million in economic development incentives. Construction on the manufacturing plant […]
