U.S. economic growth accelerated in the April-June quarter to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.7 percent. The Bureau of Economic Analysis said the rate released Wednesday was based on incomplete data and would be revised over the next month.

Woman rescued after crash

A woman was rescued Tuesday just before 5 a.m. after her car flipped upside-down into a water-filled ditch near Interstate 465 and West 38th Street. The woman said she fell asleep while driving on West 38th Street right before the accident. She was able to call for help on her phone before water filled the car. Police arrived within minutes, waded to the car and pulled her out. She suffered minor bruises.

Cake Boss met with long lines

Thousands of people swarmed the Monument Circle area Tuesday morning, lining up for blocks to receive a free cake from Buddy Valastro, who is known for his cable TV show, “Cake Boss.” Valastro began giving away 10,000 cakes at 8 a.m. The promotion is helping launch a line of Cake Boss Cakes at Kroger and other stores.

Man forced into trunk during holdup

July 30, 2013

A 38-year-old man says two masked men forced him into the trunk of his vehicle during a robbery late Monday night. The man said he and his girlfriend were sitting in his car in the 900 block of North Ewing Street, near Sherman Drive and East 10th Street, just after 11 p.m. when the men approached. In addition to cash, the men stole the speaker from the victim’s trunk before making him climb inside.

Cummins shares jump on 2-percent revenue boost

Shares of Columbus-based engine maker Cummins Inc. shot up 4 percent in Tuesday morning trading despite a reported 11-percent dip in profit for its second quarter.
