Many high-ranking administrators at Indiana University would be allowed to work past the school's current mandated retirement age of 65 under a proposed new policy that one official said would better reflects current careers.

Gun found in middle-schooler’s locker

A Wayne Township middle-schooler has been suspended and could be expelled after administrators found a handgun inside his locker. School officials at Chapel Hill 7th & 8th Grade Center said they found the gun Thursday while searching for a missing electronic device. State law calls for a mandatory one-year expulsion.

Times extended at city meters

December 7, 2012

Drivers who use parking meters downtown and in Broad Ripple won’t have to feed them as often. ParkIndy says it is extending time limits for most of the meters in those areas. Meters along downtown streets will allow weekday parking as long as three hours. Other areas have been extended up to six hours and others up to 10 hours.

Two men struck while pushing vehicle

December 7, 2012

Indianapolis police are investigating a crash in which two men were struck Friday about 6 a.m. near West Washington Street and Bridgeport Road. One victim is in critical condition, the other in serious. Police said the men are brothers who were pushing their vehicle after running out of gas. The two were struck from behind by a pickup truck. A witness said the driver of the pickup was speeding and threw something out of his truck after the collision.

Lugar starting Washington program for UIndy

Lugar is starting an internship program with the University of Indianapolis that will operate out of Washington, D.C. He has also agreed to deliver a handful of lectures each year as a distinguished professor at the private university.

Correction

December 7, 2012

Mayor Greg Ballard's administration had approved 12 new charter schools before approving its latest batch of seven new schools last month. A story in the Dec. 6 issue of IBJ Daily stated an incorrect number of previous charter approvals under Ballard. In addition, VBP Indy is no longer working with San Francisco-based Seton Partners. The story misstated the current relationship between the two organizations. A corrected version of the story is here.

The Labor Department’s report Friday offered a mixed picture of the economy. Hiring remained steady during November in the face of looming tax increases. But the jobless rate slipped in part because more people stopped looking for work.
