Man sets car on fire in cover-up attempt

The Bloomington Police Department arrested a man on Thursday for setting his car on fire to cover up his involvement in a hit-and-run. Police responded to reports of a vehicle fire at a home in the 3900 block of McDougal Street in Bloomington. Kyle May, 25, was charged with arson.  Authorities said May set his vehicle on fire and reported it stolen in an attempt to hide his involvement with several hit-and-run collisions earlier in the day.

Boy arrested in hammer-related shooting

Police say a 12-year-old Columbus boy hit a bullet cartridge with a hammer, firing a bullet that grazed a teenage girl. Columbus police Sgt. Matt Harris says the boy was playing with the live ammunition Wednesday night when he hit the cartridge on a sidewalk. The blow from the hammer ignited the primer and gunpowder. The 15-year-old girl told officers she was walking with friends when she heard the boy tell two other boys riding bicycles nearby to "watch this." She then felt something hit her neck. An ambulance was not called, but officers suggested she go to the hospital for an evaluation. The boy was taken to a juvenile detention center on a criminal recklessness charge.

Police probe fatal shooting at gas station

Speedway police are searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man early Friday at a Speedway gas station at 10th Street and Lynhurst Drive. Authorities say someone shot at two men inside a truck parked near a gas pump at the station. Passenger Tommy Thompson was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Officers believe Thompson was at the Tremors nightclub at 111 N. Lynhurst Drive on Thursday night, and that the shooting might have resulted from an incident at the venue.

Races canceled at Shelbyville horse track after complaint

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission says the closing of Indiana Downs in Shelbyville on Friday and Saturday is being done in an "abundance of caution" to protect horses and riders.

State’s unemployment rate held at 7.9 percent in May

The May jobless rate in Indiana was unchanged from April, although the state added 7,700 private-sector jobs last month, with gains in sectors including trade, transportation, utilities, and private educational and health services.

Veteran hospital exec Odle to retire from IU Health

Sam Odle, one of Indianapolis’ most prominent black business leaders, will be replaced on an interim basis by Jim Terwilliger while the hospital system conducts a national search for his successor.

A long-awaited gas station at Indianapolis International Airport is to open by the middle of next year. Plans call for the facility to include a fast-food restaurant, service bay and car wash.
