Police probe abduction attempt

September 30, 2011

Police said they are increasing their patrols in a Franklin neighborhood after a man in a van approached a young boy at a bus stop. Investigators said it happened about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Knollwood Farms subdivision. The 12-year-old boy told police he was walking to the bus stop when a white van sped past and then turned around. The driver yelled at the boy to get in the van. The boy took off, ran home and told his mother what happened.

Westfield cop put on leave

A Westfield police officer has been placed on leave while the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department investigates him for the use of excessive force. Officer Andrew Gilreath is accused of hitting 22-year-old Steven M. Smith of Indianapolis in the head with his gun while arresting him for shoplifting at a Westfield Target store on Saturday. Smith  suffered a gash on his head, had to be hospitalized and received seven staples to close the wound. A Westfield Police Department spokesman said Gilreath has been with the department for seven years and never been in trouble before.
