Three failed businesses sink former Carson foe Dickerson

June 16, 2008

Former car dealer and congressional candidate Eric Dickerson has filed for personal bankruptcy after three failed businesses
left him saddled with more than $1 million in debt. Dickerson says he is virtually broke save for a $101,000 inheritance he
is set to receive from the estate of his late mother.

A&E: Honk if you like community theater

June 16, 2008

As someone interested in contemporary musicals, I’m thrilled that Buck Creek Players annually offers at least one show unlikely to be staged anywhere else in town. It has given voice, for instance, to such obscurities as “Parade,” “Violet,” and “Side Show.” Next season, it continues the trend with the local premiere of “Grey Gardens.” Could Buck Creek do better at the box office with yet another “Joseph” or “Annie”? Probably. But company Director D. Scott Robinson is more ambitious and…

Installation of Booker art moves to July 14: Nine works sprinkled downtown were inspired by auto industry, Madam Walker, among others

June 16, 2008

Now the city is ramping up to show off 10 pieces from New Yorkbased artist Chakaia Booker-all but one of which she is creating specifically for Indianapolis. Set to roll out July 14, the ambitious outdoor show features nine pieces Booker came up with after three visits to the city. One existing piece, a 6-foot sculpture made of steel and tires that resembles a palm tree, will be installed at the Indianapolis Art Center’s ArtsPark. Her new work was inspired…

Commentary: Listen, learn at summer camp

June 16, 2008

The war in Iraq is intolerable and interminable. We are struggling with a recession, a flawed energy policy, a weak dollar and an enormous government deficit. President Bush has earned a lower approval rating than Cinderella’s stepmother-and I’m sitting here thinking, “What if the election of 2000 had gone the other way?” Join me and pose that question to Ron Klain at the men’s edition of Mickey’s Camp this summer. Klain is arguably one of the most well-known national Democrats…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Why it’s tough to get our arms around global warming

June 16, 2008

Congress is set to begin a debate on regulation designed to halt global warming. The question is whether and how we might limit greenhouse gases. Costs and benefits will be the central issue. So, despite what many would wish, this is primarily an economic debate. Below are the issues in a nutshell. There is strong scientific evidence that the Earth’s temperature is warming. Even so, there are a significant number of serious climate scientists who doubt this. And there is…

Allegiant finding treasure in clients’ trash: Local firm helps manufacturers set up cost-saving recycling plans

June 16, 2008

In 2000, gasoline cost 99 cents a gallon, you could barely give recyclable plastic away and the idea of manufacturers “going green” was a pioneering thought. Allegiant Global started that same year as Heritage Interactive Services, with one client and little market awareness of what industrial recycling and reuse initiatives meant. Heritage Interactive was started by principals of locally based Heritage Environmental Services, which was-and still is-involved in more traditional waste-disposal services. When one of Heritage Environmental’s clients, Michigan-based Lear…

June 16, 2008

An advocacy group formed a year ago to boost the visibility and growth of the state’s advanced manufacturing and logistics industries has received a major lift from Purdue University. Conexus Indiana and Purdue earlier this month announced the formation of a partnership in which the university will lend its academic and research talents to the organization. The key goals include linking manufacturers with new suppliers, exploring emerging markets and supporting startups launched from university or privatesector research. “Conexus is very…

Reducing carbon emissions could send state power prices soaring

June 16, 2008

A report from Purdue University suggests industrial customers in
Indiana could see disproportional rate increases in the years ahead as the state’s coal-intensive electric utilities are forced
to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Chrysler, Canadian firm make unusual deal

June 13, 2008

Chrysler LLC may lease part of a Kokomo transmission plant and some of its employees to Canada-based Linamar Corp., reports The Wall Street Journal. The unusual deal could save the Michigan-based automaker $60 million; Chrysler and other U.S. automakers are struggling to adjust to a consumer shift to cars from trucks and underused plants. The […]
