NoviaCare Clinics LLC, which operates on-site clinics for employers, is gradually pitching a new constellation of services, which it calls Total Patient Experience, to its 85 clients. The effort is one of a few initiatives to get employers to push deeper to address the causes of their workers’ health problems. Indianapolis-based NoviaCare is negotiating contracts with financial counselors, substance abuse counselors, mental health counselors and physical therapists who can be called in to its employer clinics to help address the underlying causes of patients’ health issues. So far, NoviaCare has signed up Batesville Tool & Dye and Hillenbrand Inc. to use the physical therapy portion of its service. NoviaCare hopes employers come to embrace its entire suite of services down the road.

The number of serious medical errors at hospitals and nursing homes fell to 100 last year from 107 in 2010, according to the Indiana State Health Department's 2011 Medical Errors report. According to a report by WTHR-TV Channel 13, the most common errors were severe bed sores, followed by surgery on the wrong body part, and foreign objects left after surgery. Indiana University Health’s three downtown hospitals reported 14 errors, the highest number in the state. But those hospitals also see more patients than any other in the report. Nearly a third of the state's hospitals reported at least one error.

Eli Lilly and Co. gave $12.4 million to the United Way, a slight uptick from its United Way gift from last year. The donation represents the contributions of Lilly’s U.S. employees and retirees, plus a matching gift from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation. The funds will help support the United Way of Central Indiana as well as other local United Way chapters around the country. Also, the Lilly Foundation gave $200,000 to the American Red Cross to provide disaster relief to victims of superstorm Sandy.

Indianapolis-based regulatory consulting firm Anson Group named Scott Thiel its director of connected health operations. In that role, he will help Anson’s customers commercialize wireless, mobile and networked technologies. Before joining Anson in 2011, Thiel served as a global regulatory affairs manager at Roche Diagnostics Corp. He holds degrees from Ball State University and Indiana Wesleyan University.

Anson Group named Scott Durlacher its director of compliance. Durlacher has worked with Anson since 2009, serving as the lead on several compliance projects. He holds degrees from Purdue University and Vanderbilt University.

Jeanelle Regal has been appointed director for Senior Promise, a Franciscan St. Francis Health-based program that provides insurance services to Hoosiers 50 and older. Regal received a bachelor’s in psychology from Andrews University in Michigan, and later earned a master’s in social work at Indiana University.

Medicaid expansion could cost $54M a year

A new set of projections released Monday estimates that expanding Medicaid coverage as called for in President Obama’s 2010 health reform law would cost the state government less than $54 million per year on average over the next decade—far lower than projections issued by the actuarial firm hired by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ administration.

Woman killed by hit-and-run driver

November 26, 2012

Police say a 78-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run Sunday night while walking home from a rural church a few miles west of Zionsville. Anita Wernsing was struck along State Road 267 about 100 yards from Mount Tabor Primitive Church. Investigators say the vehicle that hit Wernsing ran off the road, then continued northbound without stopping. Police are examining automotive parts left at the scene in hopes of finding the vehicle.
 

Assessment fees benefit Indy hospitals

IU Health and Community enjoyed net gains of $267 million and $23 million, respectively, from the hospital assessment fee program during the fiscal year ended June 30.

Family displaced by overnight fire

November 26, 2012

A fire gutted a home on the west side of Indianapolis early Monday morning, displacing five residents. The blaze broke out about 1 a.m. on North Tremont Street near 10th Street, causing an estimated $45,000 in damage. A renter and her four children arrived home while firefighters were battling the blaze. A cause was not immediately determined, but the family was using several space heaters.
 

Armed robber hits Noblesville CVS

November 26, 2012

Noblesville police searched the area near Riverview Hospital following a reported armed robbery Monday morning. According to police, a suspect held a gun to a clerk’s head during a robbery at the CVS drugstore in the 100 block of Lakeview Drive about 6:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.
