Ill driver causes accident

December 21, 2011

An elderly driver who injured a pedestrian and struck several other vehicles after falling ill behind the wheel has died, police said. The driver, identified only as a 70-year-old man, was driving east on 38th Street near Franklin Road about 4 p.m. Tuesday when he became ill, hitting three cars and striking a pedestrian. Police said the driver suffered from a medical condition and was in critical condition after the incident. The pedestrian suffered a broken leg.

Charges coming in double murder

December 21, 2011

Formal charges are expected to be filed Wednesday against the two men accused of shooting and killing a 7-year-old Cumberland girl and her 21-year-old uncle. Witnesses said suspect Michael Bell took the murder weapon from a woman at his aunt's house the day before Jeremy and Kyleigh Crane were killed. Shortly after the murders, Bell and a second suspect, Jeremy Priel, were seen together on an IndyGo bus with victim Jeremy Crane's cell phone. Priel's fiancé told police she saw Priel and Bell with the gun, along with video game systems believed to be stolen from the Crane home. Bell was a friend of the Crane family, living with them for a time. Both suspects are expected to appear in court Thursday.

Daniels gives state workers year-end pay raises

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels on Wednesday announced pay raises of up to 6 percent depending on state employees' performance. About 75 percent will see a 2 percent increase under the plan.

A City-County Council member and two associates persuaded an Indiana physician to invest $1.7 million in their foundation and an ethanol-production business they said would fund it, but instead spent the money on personal luxuries, according to a federal indictment filed late Tuesday.

Brightpoint suing former exec in trade secret dispute

The Indianapolis-based wireless distributor accuses Mitch Black, who left Brightpoint last year, of taking company trade secrets to a new job with a direct competitor. Brightstar Corp. also is named in the lawsuit.

Area firms pledge 365 jobs

Two Central Indiana firms will receive tax incentives for growing their operations by a combined 365 workers by 2015, Indiana economic development officials announced Wednesday.

White Castle burger chain tries offering alcohol

Atlanta-based Georgia Gulf Corp. has told state officials it expects in March to shut down the Royal Building Products factory in the Kosciusko County town of Milford, costing 70 people their jobs.

Honda reworking Civic in plan to boost sales

Honda Motor Co. is sprucing up its Indiana-made Civic sedan, which received poor ratings, after less than a year on the market as part of a plan to boost U.S. sales by 24 percent in 2012 for its namesake brand.
