CBO: No great savings from health reform

Don’t expect the health reform law to tame health care costs. That’s the conclusion of the director of the Congressional Budget Office, who also suggested some of the simplest ways to moderate costs would be to roll back some of its key provisions.

Gov. John Kasich vetoed a bill Friday that would have allowed Ohio factories to pull more water out of Lake Erie, amid pressure from governors from other Great Lakes states who expressed concerned about the measure.

Boy, 2, killed by 5-year-old brother

Connersville police say a 5-year-old boy shot his 2-year-old brother to death after finding a gun in the family's home. Police say the shooting, which took place Thursday about 8 p.m., was likely accidental. No arrests were made. Police were investigating to determine how the boy got his hands on the gun.

Man shoots self after police chase

July 15, 2011

A man who led police on a 30-minute chase early Friday morning on the northeast side of Indianapolis fatally shot himself after he crashed, authorities say. Mwaka Hare, 34, of Indianapolis was being questioned by police just after midnight at a gas station at 56th Street and Caito Drive after they received a call from a woman who said he was chasing her. While they were questioning him, he got back in his vehicle and fled. He led police on a slow-speed chase on interstates 465 and 70 before crashing in the 9700 block of Pendleton Pike in Lawrence. Police said he shot himself in the head with a handgun before they arrived at the car.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the pace of mortgage loan activity fell 5.1 percent for the week ended July 8, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The rate for 30-year mortgages decreased to 4.55 percent from 4.69 percent the previous week. The rate for 15-year mortgages decreased to 3.68 percent from 3.79 percent.

-Dr. Idella Simmons bought a 4,000-square-foot building at 946 N. Alabama St. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by Ralph Balber of Newmark Knight Frank Halakar. The sellers, Brent & Beverly Precious, were represented by Brad King of Colliers International.

-Koumbari LLC bought a 3,680-square-foot restaurant building at 400 Jackson St., Cicero, for $265,000. The buyer and seller, Jackson St. Diner LLC, were represented by Matt Jackson of Ambrose Property Group.

-Laser Shine Wash N Vac bought a 2,400-square-foot freestanding building on 0.72 acres at 1990 Conner St., Noblesville. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer and seller, Delstrat Indy Holdings LLC, were represented by  Bob Lindgren and Ron Mannon of Lee & Associates.

A lease published in last week’s Real Estate Weekly included the wrong address for TKO Tae Kwon Do. The 4,261-square-foot lease is at 9445 N. Meridian St.
