Business hotel planned for Shelbyville

July 21, 2008

Business hotel planned for Shelbyville SHELBY COUNTY-Recent growth in and around Shelbyville has been enough to convince one hotel developer to jump in. Greenwood-based Reainco Development Corp. will build a 74-room Holiday Inn Express hotel at the intersection of Interstate 74 and State Road 9. The addition of a casino to Indiana Downs in Shelbyville […]

Ralston Square development lures bar, hotel, bowling alley

July 7, 2008

A trendy bar and an upscale hotel have agreed to anchor the 11-story Ralston Square project slated for South Street between
Meridian and Pennsylvania streets. The developers of the $60 million mixed-use project are moving forward after landing the
tenants necessary to secure a loan commitment, said Brian Epstein, president of locally based Urban Space Commercial Properties
and a partner on the project.

Browning planning 4-star hotel in Evansville

May 20, 2008

Browning Investments, the Indianapolis developer that has built projects ranging from the NCAA headquarters to the downtown Marriott Hotel, is considering building a four-star hotel in downtown Evansville near the Aztar Casino and a possible new arena desired by some Evansville boosters. Browning said a new arena and other attractions would lure convention traffic, and […]

Kite eyes retail, hotel for Pan Am

April 7, 2008

A local developer hopes to add restaurants and retail space and possibly more to Pan Am Plaza to capitalize on a growing convention center and the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Kite…

Slots at horse-racing tracks may boost meeting space: Hotels in long-term plans if ‘racinos’ are successful

April 7, 2008

Two thousand slot machines at each of Indiana’s two biggest horse tracks should attract hordes of Hoosiers willing to try their luck on the one-armed bandits. But, ultimately, owners want to add meeting and convention space to capture other business as well. Legislation approved by the General Assembly in 2007 permits the slots at horse-racing facilities Hoosier Park in Anderson and Indiana Downs in Shelbyville. The law paves the way for the creation of what many are calling “racinos”-casinos that…

Johnson officials considering hotel tax

March 7, 2008

Officials in Greenwood and Franklin want Johnson County to consider implementing a hotel tax, reports the Daily Journal of Franklin. The money would be used to create a convention and visitors bureau. The tax, which likely would be as high as 5 percent, wouldn’t happen before next year because the current legislative session is set […]

Airport may pay $8.8 million for hotel: Deal pending; Westin won’t open until at least 2009

February 25, 2008

The Indianapolis Airport Authority board this month approved spending up to $8.8 million to help fund construction of a hotel connected to the midfield terminal set to debut Oct. 28. But delays in finalizing a deal with developer Mansur Real Estate Services means the $50-million-plus Westin will not be ready for guests until August 2009 at the earliest. The airport board picked Indianapolis-based Mansur to build the hotel nearly a year ago. “We’re still talking about what it’s going to…

Pedestrian bridge to state park still in the works: White River venues think hotel complex will be a boost

February 4, 2008

Developers of the $425 million hotel complex downtown still are working out plans for a pedestrian bridge spanning Washington Street that will connect it to White River State Park. Merrillville-based White Lodging Co. and Indianapolis-based REI Real Estate Services proposed a connector-either a bridge or an underground tunnel-in early designs of the convention hotel complex at the southwest corner of West and Washington streets. Although later site plans did not include the link, REI President Mike Wells said the developers…

City unlikely to reap convention hotel profits

December 26, 2007

City officials have agreed to pay $48.5 million of the $300 million cost of building a 1,000-room JW Marriott hotel in downtown Indianapolis, but a profit-sharing agreement that is part of the deal isn’t likely to yield payments for the city, a hotel industry expert said. Developers of the convention hotel signed a final deal […]

Union push under way at 2 Indianapolis hotels: They would be first to unionize in central Indiana

December 24, 2007

Employees at two Indianapolis hotels have begun a push to unionize-a move that, if successful, would make the properties the only union hotels in central Indiana. Several workers at the downtown Westin and the Keystone Sheraton have met with representatives of New York-based Unite Here, a labor group that represents about 440,000 hospitality and textile employees nationwide. Both hotels are part of Bethesda, Md.-based Host Hotels & Resorts Inc.’s global portfolio. Backers said a union is needed to raise wages…

BREAKING: Convention hotel project gets bigger

December 19, 2007

Plans for a 1,000-room JW Marriott convention hotel now envision a taller building, with a whole new look and a larger price tag. The hotel would be 34 stories, up from 29, and the entire project – which includes three other hotels – would cost $425 million, up from $350 million. The redesigned facade will […]

Should city embrace hotel union?

December 14, 2007

Just when you thought plans for a new downtown convention hotel were set to go forward, four City-County
Council members want the full council to essentially force the new hotel to employ union workers after it
opens.

The City-County Council, which…

Council vote could threaten convention hotel

December 14, 2007

Backers of the $250 million convention hotel project slated for downtown are raising alarm bells about a City-County Council resolution they say would kill the deal between the city and developers. The resolution, sponsored by Democratic council member Joanne Sanders, requires the hotel to have a “labor peace agreement” to get city financing. The Bond […]

Marriott to add West Lafayette hotels

November 28, 2007

Marriott International Inc., the Bethesda, Md., hotel chain, plans to construct a building near the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette that will house two hotels, the city announced Nov. 27. The building, which is to be completed by December 2009, will have a 151-room Spring Hill Suites and a Fairfield Inn & Suites with […]

Flurry of city hotels undergo makeovers: At least a half-dozen properties get big renovations

November 12, 2007

The managers of many downtown hotels are sinking millions of dollars into their properties, hoping to burnish product that will soon compete with roughly 2,340 rooms in several new hotel construction projects. And while regular renovations are the lifeblood of the hotel industry, experts say the market’s rash of big-ticket overhauls is also a defensive move. The biggest competition for existing hotels is likely to come from the $325 million J.W. Marriott complex, which will include the city’s largest convention…

Conventions abandon hotel-challenged Muncie

October 29, 2007

The executive director of the Horizon Convention Center in downtown Muncie estimates the center has lost half a dozen conventions since the historic Roberts Hotel across the street closed a year ago. Joann McKinney said in The Star Press that the loss of the city’s last downtown hotel left convention-goers no place convenient to rest, […]

Highway project could swallow hotel

October 15, 2007

A $600-million plan to revamp interstates 465 and 69 on the northeast side could have a major impact on buildings near the highways. Several properties, including a couple of office buildings, some…

Conrad owners tussle with project architect: Lawsuit alleges firms are owed more than $850,000 for work on $100 million downtown luxury hotel

September 3, 2007

The cranes and contractors have been gone from the site of the Conrad Indianapolis for about 18 months. But wrangling over the project continues in court. The private owners of the $100 million project are quarreling with prominent local architects Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf and New York-based engineering firm Cosentini Associates over how much they’re owed for their work. Both Browning and Cosentini have filed liens: Browning says it is owed $764,000; Cosentini claims $91,000. The owners say in a…

DogDayz Playhouse & Retreat LLC: It’s a dog’s life Canine day camp offers hotel-like comfort

August 20, 2007

When Gabi comes to work, she enters a room with food and toys before walking down a winding hallway to greet her guests. The friendly welcome she receives could be due to her soft, black hair or her mellow charisma, but her happy tail wag is probably a factor, too. Gabi is “head dog” at Noblesville-based DogDayz Playhouse and Retreat. Her human companion, Brian Cottrell, launched DogDayz in 2003 to offer other pet lovers the kind of services he wanted…

Hotel glut developing downtown: Lodging projects could lift room totals by 40 percent

August 6, 2007

The 10 hotels either under construction or in the planning stages downtown would increase the amount of rooms in the city’s center more than 40 percent-a far greater number than the market likely could absorb, experts fear. The projects are largely in response to Lucas Oil Stadium, slated to be completed by August 2008 and an expansion of the Indiana Convention Center that will nearly double its size by 2010. If all 10 hotel projects come to fruition, almost 2,300…
