Complex issues at play here with no simple answers I’m sure. However, you don’t do the level of deficit spending we’re seeing from the Federal government with inflationary effects. Some of the spending is targeted at dubious “infrastructure” projects that don’t actually create jobs but make it easier for people to not work and contribute to the economy. At to it pressure to increase minimum wages, if not by law then by social shaming, and of course prices will go up. We can debate what level of a social safety net is wise, but in the name of saving some lives now from COVID, we may be setting the stage for long-term economic woes that will inordinately negatively impact lower income families as economic downturns always do. In response to this, the administration is trying to force employers to reduce their profits by lowering prices. No doubt there are some relative bad actors out there who are taking advantage of things for no purpose other than to increase the wealth of their owners/shareholders. However, most likely most of it is trying to cover the higher costs to operate and even to build a cash cushion should other traumas hit the economy like further threatened lock-downs, etc. If you further try to shame these companies into lower prices, then that will most likely mean that they will take fewer innovation risks and higher fewer people.
There needs to be balance here, and this article gives me the feel that politics is going toward blaming businesses for bad federal economic policy.
