34 North, an apartment complex for victims of domestic abuse, opened in August at 34th and Meridian streets.
Raising capital for the 71-unit complex has been a major focus of The Julian Center, a shelter for abused women.
Last spring, the center was awarded $8.1 million in federal tax credits over 10 years. The organization also received a $1
million grant from the United Way of Central Indiana and donations from Deborah Simon, the Efroymson Family Fund, the Reuben
Family Foundation, Mike and Sue Smith, and the Myrta Pulliam Fund.
Key Bank provided $4.2 million in construction financing and $1.9 million in permanent financing. The bank also will make
a $6 million equity investment through Low Income Housing Tax Credits.
The complex consists of 52 new apartments and 19 rehabbed units, formerly called the Vernon Apartments. Indianapolis-based
Herman & Kittle Properties Inc. was the co-developer. The Julian Center will own the complex.•
