Republican Todd Young has defeated five-term Democratic Rep. Baron Hill in southern Indiana's 9th district, dealing Democrats a second loss in congressional seats they held in the state.
Hill has been a leader of the moderate Blue Dog caucus of Democratic congressmen but came under fire from Republicans for his votes supporting the federal stimulus and health care overhaul bills.
Young is a 38-year-old attorney from Bloomington who defeated former Rep. Mike Sodrel and others in the primary. He got fundraising help from former Vice President Dan Quayle, who is his wife's uncle.
The two parties spent millions on ads in the district as Republicans fought for the seat Hill had won in five of the last six elections. Hill lost to Sodrel in 2004 and won a rematch two years later.
