Directors of Indianapolis-based USA Track & Field announced on Wednesday that interim CEO Mike McNees will continue leading the organization through next year’s Olympics.

Nine months after firing CEO Doug Logan, officials had hoped to have a replacement named well in advance of the U.S. Track & Field Championships June 23-26 in Oregon. But that didn’t happen.

Since September, the organization had conducted an “exhaustive” search for a new leader and had interviewed more than 100 candidates, including three finalists, without success, Track & Field said in a written statement.

Directors thought they had the perfect candidate earlier this year, but after several interviews, University of Oregon track coach Vin Lananna decided to stay at his current job.

McNees had served as Track & Field’s chief operating officer before being promoted to interim CEO.

The 2012 Summer Olympics are scheduled for London from July 27 to Aug. 12.
