… a few ups
It was the bleakest year for business in a generation. Troubles that began in the subprime mortgage market spread in 2008 throughout the Indiana and national economies-wreaking havoc in industries ranging from automaking and banking to home building and retailing. Meanwhile, rattled investors fled the stock market, which was on track to suffer its worst percentage loss in more than 70 years.
But it wasn’t all gloom and doom. Indianapolis unveiled two new landmarks, the $720 million
Lucas Oil Stadium and $1.1 billion midfield airport terminal. And after coming up short a year earlier, the city succeeded in its quest to host a Super Bowl, in 2012. Meanwhile, Indiana-of all places-became a battleground state in the presidential election, spurring unusually high voter turnout.
