Certain students who go on to teach science, math or special education in Indiana could get up to $9,000 to pay off loans if a legislative proposal becomes law.
Lawmakers on Thursday unanimously passed a measure to reward strong students who commit to teach science, technology, mathematics, education or special education. Teachers in areas with educator shortages also would qualify.
Students would get the money after their third year teaching in Indiana.
Only those who graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class or score in the top 20 percent of ACT or SAT scores, and graduated college with at least a 3.5 grade-point average would be eligible for the loan reimbursement.
The measure now goes back to the Senate for final approval.
