Subscribe NowTrucking and logistics company Knight Transportation Inc. plans to add as many as 426 employees at its new Regional Operations Service Center in Plainfield by the end of 2021, the company announced Tuesday.
Phoenix-based Knight acquired 27 acres for the facility at 3875 Plainfield Road, about a mile from Indianapolis International Airport, early last year for roughly $4 million. Knight bought the land from Six Points Road Developers LLC, which previously operated Indy Park Ride & Fly at the site.
Knight spent seven months and more than $6 million to renovate the facility into its Regional Operations Service Center.
The site serves as an operations center for Knight’s customers in the Indianapolis and Chicago markets, as well as a regional recruiting and training center where Knight will train drivers based throughout the Eastern United States.
Knight, which has had local operations for almost 20 years, was previously located at 3702 W. Minnesota St., near Holt Road, on the southwest side of Indianapolis.
The new 34,000-square-foot facility more than doubles Knight’s office space and includes a 20,000-square-foot truck maintenance shop, a truck wash and fueling station.
Knight said the location provides space for future growth of its divisions and business lines. It plans to eventually manage more than 500 trucks at the Plainfield facility.
The center is one of 35 Knight locations in 24 states. The company has 5,500 employees across the country, including more than 125 in Indiana. It has begun hiring driving associates, mechanics and entry-level managers.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Knight up to $3.6 million in conditional tax credits based on the job-creation plans. The IEDC said the credits won’t be granted until the company meets its employment goals.
The town of Plainfield approved additional incentives.
