The Indianapolis Airport Authority has been awarded $12.6 million in federal and state grants that will be used for a variety of projects including the purchase of six electric shuttle buses for the Indianapolis International Airport.

The electric buses are intended to replace six diesel buses. The six vehicles would constitute the largest electric shuttle bus fleet in any U.S. airport, according to IAA officials.

The purchases are being funded with a $2.6 million federal Zero Emissions Vehicle grant.

The Indianapolis international Airport will receive more than $10 million from the $12.6 million grants total. The IIA  money also will be applied to taxiway rehabilitation, emergency notification equipment and storm-water management.

The remainder of the grant funds will be used for maintenance and upgrades at Metropolitan Airport in Fishers, the Eagle Creek Airpark, the Indianapolis Regional Airport in Mount Comfort and the Downtown Heliport.

“These grants enable us to ensure our goals of maintaining and operating the airport facilities in a way that maximizes the life of those facilities as assets to the community and to continue to be an example of safety, security and environmental stewardship,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the IAA, in a prepared statement.
