No tax abatement! Every company comes now with their handout looking for the taxpayers to give them something. This is going to generate very few jobs for the local area.
Giving a rare +5 to Rea P
Looks like a good project for a heavy industrial zoned property.
Agree. There’s little difference in the physical configuration of factories, big warehouses, and data centers (they are big and not especially attractive). But with a data center, there is WAY less traffic and far less noise from trucks idling and backing than would be the case at a factory or warehouse.
On the other hand, because of the high value of the business personal property, the City should not give away those taxes generally to data centers. And on this site in particular, the City should look really hard at giving away property tax since that goes into a TIF that can benefit the neighborhood. Some abatement may be sensible, but full abatement should be a nonstarter. Given the revenue starvation campaign conducted by the Statehouse Republicans, cities need all the local tax revenue they can generate.
*should read “far less noise and pollution from trucks idling and backing”
I wonder how many KWH’s this data center is going to use?
With a major substation on the site, it’s well positioned to connect to the grid, but the power has to come from somewhere…
