  1. And if the request is denied and maintenance is needed, guess who gets stuck with the bill and it isn’t Donald “I think I am Jesus” Trump.

  2. I used to work in IT at IPL, so not directly involved with power generation, but it amazed me that most of these power plants were like a museum of antique technology. The Harding Street station had 7 coal fired generation units. When I worked there, units 1, 2, 3, 4 were already permantly shut down. Unit one was installed in the late 30’s or early 40’s. Unit 4 dated from the 50’s. Unit 5-6 from the maybe 60’s. Unit 7 is in the big 20 story building to the south and it dates to the mid 1970’s. That 20 story building holds just ONE boiler and generator. It also took a long time to understand what wears out on a coal fired steam turbine. Boilers the size of small office building need a lot of maintenance. Turbine blades need to be replaced on a regular basis. All the pollution control equipment is subject to corrosive hot gases. These are huge complex and very old machines. They take a lot of maintenance and $18 million will most likely keep it running for just a few years, if they’re lucky. Also, a coal fired power plant takes a crew of maybe 100 or more employees to keep it running, more if the control systems are old technology. Keeping this running is waste of rate payer’s money.
