Of course they do. What a joke. Shame on them.
Murray, do you know how many hours a week city-county councilors devote to fulfilling their duties? And how much BS they have to put up from constituents who do nothing but complain and criticize? All things considered, would you do it? If you think you would then run for office. In other words, get off the sidelines and put your opinions to work as a public servant.
Fulfilling their duties as a result of their offer to volunteer those services? The typically every two weeks full council meeting on top of subcommittee meetings that they go out of their way to be appointed to? The default to voicemail or email – only to typically be called out for not being responsive on hot topic issues? The time it takes to ban users on Facebook and other social media because some can’t take the heat? Or the bullying of public staff to handle their issues they can barely speak knowledgeably on? I’m sure it takes a bit of time. But let’s not act blindly as if they aren’t handsomely rewarded for their efforts outside of the stipulations of their office. As you said, it is a public service position, an entirely voluntary one.
Ok a side note, what do you do, Brent? You’re often critical of people who have outsized impact on their communities merely because you don’t agree with them. Where’s your effort to challenge them on their fields and get off the sidelines?
Aside from the merits of public office, look at the pathetic pay the city offers many of it’s most important positions, whether it be in DPW, BNS, DMD or OCC. The actual public servants who make them look good. Maybe get their pay up to snuff to attract quality candidates who want to be here so their performance improves overall before handing themselves raises. As someone actively engaged in the development community, that would be money better well spent.
Good for them! It’s about time they receive their due! Too many of the citizens of Indianapolis take them for granted, easily criticizing them for being concerned citizens who care.
Good! The low pay is an extreme barrier to having a representative City-County Council.
How many folks could take the needed time out of their lives to be a councilor for such meager pay? In order to allow more citizens to participate in democracy, we need to ensure that being wealthy isn’t a barrier to run for office.
That’s change!! Spend it and shutup!! And get some big things done and make it back plus much more!!!
I hope they get the raise. They earn every dime of it. The demands placed on these public servants is more than a full time job all for the bargain price to taxpayers of $11,400 a year. You get what you pay for and in order to attract and retain talent, we have to start recognizing the value of their time and commitment and start compensating accordingly. Would you work for the same wage rate that you did in 2002? Why should we expect them to?
Wish we all could just vote to TRIPLE our pay.
No raise till the gigantic potholes are filled. The mayor lost a tire and suddenly Meridian was repaired since hole that ate his tire was there. The potholes are the worst in years!
