It’s fantastic that we’re able to secure Corteva and only by providing “soft services” like road upgrades that are warranted anyway.
That said, it’s amusing that Corteva has for decades built out a campus in a purposely isolated corner of the county and is now asking for more interesting amenities to be around it. It’s a bit like building a housing subdivision next to an expressway and then asking INDOT to install sound barriers because it’s too loud.
Corteva should lead by example and create a satellite office near Purdue Indy campus or at 16Tech to help fill out that district and help create more of a real life sciences hub. Indy has so many great Life Sciences assets and workers, but no neighborhood where anyone can cross path with colleagues at other companies, their vendors, consultants, suppliers or customers. Think Silicon Valley’s Sand Hill Road/Menlo Park, Boston/Cambridge’s Kendall Square. These are the kinds of places where bigger stuff happens compared to when each company inhabits its own isolated island. Lilly, IU School of Medicine, IU Health, Roche, Beckman Coulter, Corteva, Elanco, Elevance, Purdue, 16Tech, and the other hospital systems together represent an extraordinary concentration of talent, science, capital, customers, suppliers, and institutional knowledge. Indy has many of the ingredients, but it lacks the place. But too much is scattered across isolated corporate, hospital, university, and suburban islands.
A satellite office near Purdue Indy / 16Tech could be powerful precisely because it would help create a shared geography. It would not just be an office. It would be a signal: this is where Indiana’s life-sciences economy comes together. Create visible critical mass. Give vendors, consultants, suppliers, and customers a reason to locate nearby. Make Purdue’s Indianapolis presence feel integrated with the city’s existing life-sciences base. Encourage startups and lab-service firms to cluster. Bring and and support restaurants, cafés, hotels and bars there and help turn 16Tech from a project into a genuine district. Aspire higher Indy…Leaders, lead!
This is great news for Indianapolis.
