Situated well: It’s a good time to be in the business of providing custom packing supplies and whatever else customers need to get their products safely from Point A to Point B, Mavpak owner John Goo said. His company doubled the number of states it’s in from four to eight in the past year, he said, thanks to “some great customers asking us to take care of them elsewhere. They have a warehouse here and they have a warehouse in another state and they say, ‘Can you replicate that success that we have in Indy?’”

Pandemic life: Since Mavpak sells packaging, the pandemic didn’t hurt. “People are shopping online more, so our e-commerce customers have grown,” Goo said. “People who are shipping direct to consumers, their business grew. And we service a good mix of both. We work super hard, and God blesses hard work.”

New communications: The pandemic also motivated Mavpak to develop new ways to do business by going virtual and digital and using video to communicate. The company built a full-blown production studio and is creating content and using technology to figure out how it can be better, faster and stronger. “At first it was pretty clunky, but we’ve hit our stride,” Goo said. “It takes us a fraction of the time to get proposals and projects done, which our customers really appreciate.”

Faster sales: Sales calls that used to take six weeks now take a week. “Now, the second we’re done internally, we’re delivering our presentation in a professional video format and sending it to the customer saying, ‘Here’s our proposal. Let’s get together and get your feedback.’ We’re winning more because we’re spending a lot less time, so we have more capacity to work on more projects.”

Big target: Goo said Mavpak is adding to its leadership team and continues to expand its geographic footprint. His goal is to be at $50 million in revenue in three years. “We’re just now starting to hit our stride, and we’re building this company to scale,” he said. “It’s a tall task, but I’ve got a lot of really smart people on my team and we’ll be there in 2-1/2 years, I’m pretty sure.”•
