Nine Indiana breweries won awards Thursday in the World Beer Cup, a decades-old competition hosted in Indianapolis for the first time.

Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewing Co. led the way among Hoosier companies by collecting three awards, including one gold and two bronze.

Five Indiana breweries were selected for gold awards in the competition made up of 112 beer categories and five cider categories.

In addition to Sun King, the Indiana-based gold winners were Westfield-based Grand Junction Brewing Co., Whitestown-based Moontown Brewing Co., Columbus-based Zwanzigz Pizza and Brewing and Michigan City-based Shoreline Brewery.

In its 29th year, the World Beer Cup is part of the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, which occupied the Indiana Convention Center this week. More than 550 vendors showcase their products during the largest craft-brewery-specific show in the United States.

A panel of 265 World Beer Cup judges evaluated more than 8,000 entries from 1,761 companies.

Noblesville-based Primeval Brewing collected a silver award, while Indianapolis-based Guggman Haus Brewing Co., Indianapolis-based Bier Brewery and Greenfield-based Wooden Bear Brewing Co. each won a bronze.
