The project will include a new distribution facility, an investment in advanced printing technology and upgrades to its headquarters on the city’s west side, 4625 W. 62nd St.
Founded in 1920, Herff Jones initially operated out of an old fire engine building. As of late 2023, the company had roughly 1,200 employees companywide, including about 500 in the Indianapolis area. Its key products include class rings and jewelry, caps and gowns, diplomas, frames and announcements, and motivation and recognition programs.
Herff Jones plans to modernize its office space and technology infrastructure with the intent to support a more connected and collaborative work environment, the company said, aligning with the company’s return-to-office policy, which goes into effect in September.
“We are proud to deepen our roots in Indianapolis by investing in a next-generation distribution facility that will create new opportunities for local talent,” Herff Jones CEO Ron Stoupa said in a written statement. “While we are focused on operational efficiency, Herff Jones is first committed to honoring our legacy as we build a future that continues to celebrate achievement for millions of students across the country.”
Herff Jones announced its plans in partnership with Indy Economic Development, which works to advance the city’s economic growth.
“We are proud to support their continued investment in our community bringing new, high-quality jobs to the city while attracting talent to a company that celebrates student accomplishments and lifelong achievement,” Jim Schellinger, president and CEO of Indy Economic Development, said in a written statement. “This expansion is a win for Indianapolis and for the generations of students Herff Jones continues to inspire.”
A spokesperson told IBJ on Wednesday that the organization offered Herff Jones a personal property tax abatement valued at $350,000 over a seven-year period.
Herff Jones also announced this week plans to consolidate its manufacturing facilities in Champaign and Arcola, Illinois, expanding the latter and shifting its distribution efforts to Indianapolis.
Herff Jones was once one of Indianapolis’ largest private companies. In 2012, the company reported $675 million in revenue and 7,000 employees companywide. Greenwich, Connecticut-based Atlas Holdings now owns much of the company.
