We should just have mass transit and infrastructure that, among other things, broadly facilitates safe self-transportation of children to school (with an obvious exception for the youngest of elementary aged students). It’s absurd that each school district has its own dedicated transportation system, and even more absurd that now charter & private schools are going to start yet another school bus network – especially considering the short supply of bus drivers in this country. We simply need to build more sidewalks, trails, protected bike lanes, and protected crosswalks, then invest in IndyGo.
here in Indianapolis & in much of the rest of the US, a kid trying to get to school is likely to get squished by a car. In most of the rest of the developed world, kids can safely make it to school unassisted at 8-10 years old. In this way, though, the US is more like an undeveloped country than a developed country. Sad & pathetic.
