How about trying to maintain what is currently there? When crossing the Indiana/Ohio border, there is a drastic change in the pavement condition.

INDOT defers maintenance on I-70 for so long that it requires reconstruction every 20 years or so.
It’s actually quite embarrassing how bad the roads get as soon as you cross into Indiana from ohio.
That was my first reaction to this knuckleheaded idea.
There is no excuse for the condition I-70 is in.
What happened to all the surplus in state budgets?

Add this on top of the boondoggle that Braun wants near his hometown of Jasper. Even residents in that area do not want it. Connecting I-64 to I-69 in order to save a few minutes?? Be real.
The Braun Boondoggle is projected to cost anywhere from $1-3 Billion, depending on the various estimates. That money should be used elsewhere.

Both 70 and 65 should be at least three lanes in each direction from state line to state line. This needed to be done at least two decades ago.
The federal funds that could be allocated for interstate maintenance are, of course, sent instead to Israel to blow up civilians.
When I read this my first reaction is I don’t want to pay tolls every time I drive on I70!.
Then I thought about it a little more. The Interstate highway system is basically a tax subsidized replacement for a national rail road system. It has enabled and encouraged the world’s largest trucking fleet. It has promoted the US Automobile industry. It has suppressed viable mass transit. There is a real cost to build and maintain these roads and as Indiana calculated, it’s about $0.10 per mile per car.
I am sure that tolling on I-70 is going to have some unintended consequences, like shifting traffic away from I70, and before Indiana jumps into this, I would like to see what the traffic engineers have predicted. I can already see that cars and trucks jumping on 465 rather than pay another few dollars to pass through downtown Indy and INDOT has already said that 465 doesn’t have the capacity to handle that extra traffic.
I-70 is an unmitigated disaster, so I support this initiative. Governor Taft of Ohio had a similar initiative to upgrade I-71 to three lanes 25 years ago. It has worked beautifully. Tolling is a consumer-based model whereby revenue is generated by those who use it. It makes perfect sense. With the onset of EVs (which limits gas tax revenue), increased population (which increases the number of vehicles passing over I-70) and the increased cost of construction, this is a sensible solution for everybody. I’m surprised he hasn’t supported tolling for I-65, I-69 and I-64 as well. He could have a “One Pass” for all Interstates in Indiana.
Expansion of (2) lanes need to be for commercial vehicles GVW 20,000 + ONLY. Smaller trucks, vans, passenger vehicles should not have to drive alongside 80,000 pound death machines. The smaller, non commercial vehicles should have a 5 cent per mile fee (not 10) or US 40 will be the ‘new I-70’ creating more problems.
Tolls need to be weight based. Road damage (wear and tear) is a geometric function of vehicle weight.
And that means all-electric vehicles are getting a free ride now and need to pay a lot more because they are heavier than those powered by internal combustion engines…Elon’s Cybertrucks weigh almost 7,000 pounds, a thousand pounds more than the 4 door 4WD Chevy Silverado; Prius Prime (plug-in) is 15% heavier than its hybrid version.
And…NO TRUCKS IN THE LEFT LANE. EVER. ANYWHERE on a 3-lane highway. This includes box trucks, pickups with trailers, service trucks, tow trucks…
Getting rid of that prohibition is among the least safe highway practices ever enacted by the State Legislature.

No one else would bill the Mid-States corridor either so hopefully he doesn’t do that.
So for the average automobile, you’ll pay more in tolls than in gas to get across Indiana That fee is crazy high.
I would be interested in knowing how well our crack congressional delegation was able to bring federal highway dollars to Indiana – or not. This HW 70 proposal perhaps would not be proposed if the delegation had actually done its job for Indiana. Take a look at 65 as well. It should be 3 lanes throughout the state.

It’s interesting that I-65 through both KY and TN is 3 lane all the way and there are no tolls. Our roads and streets are an embarrassment.

According to Google Maps, Richmond to Terre Haute using the “avoid highways” option takes 3 hours 56 minutes.
Using I-70 it’s 2 hours 28 minutes (if you drive the speed limit, and no one does). More like 2 hours and 10 minutes.
No one will be using US40 across Indiana to avoid tolls when it would take almost twice as long.
