How about trying to maintain what is currently there? When crossing the Indiana/Ohio border, there is a drastic change in the pavement condition.
Agree completely.
+1
INDOT defers maintenance on I-70 for so long that it requires reconstruction every 20 years or so.
It’s actually quite embarrassing how bad the roads get as soon as you cross into Indiana from ohio.
That was my first reaction to this knuckleheaded idea.
There is no excuse for the condition I-70 is in.
What happened to all the surplus in state budgets?
Frankly, it should have been 6 lanes a decade ago.
Crossroads of America is Potholes of America.
+1
Add this on top of the boondoggle that Braun wants near his hometown of Jasper. Even residents in that area do not want it. Connecting I-64 to I-69 in order to save a few minutes?? Be real.
The Braun Boondoggle is projected to cost anywhere from $1-3 Billion, depending on the various estimates. That money should be used elsewhere.
Completely agree.
Who wants this?!
Both 70 and 65 should be at least three lanes in each direction from state line to state line. This needed to be done at least two decades ago.
The federal funds that could be allocated for interstate maintenance are, of course, sent instead to Israel to blow up civilians.
When I read this my first reaction is I don’t want to pay tolls every time I drive on I70!.
Then I thought about it a little more. The Interstate highway system is basically a tax subsidized replacement for a national rail road system. It has enabled and encouraged the world’s largest trucking fleet. It has promoted the US Automobile industry. It has suppressed viable mass transit. There is a real cost to build and maintain these roads and as Indiana calculated, it’s about $0.10 per mile per car.
I am sure that tolling on I-70 is going to have some unintended consequences, like shifting traffic away from I70, and before Indiana jumps into this, I would like to see what the traffic engineers have predicted. I can already see that cars and trucks jumping on 465 rather than pay another few dollars to pass through downtown Indy and INDOT has already said that 465 doesn’t have the capacity to handle that extra traffic.
I-70 is an unmitigated disaster, so I support this initiative. Governor Taft of Ohio had a similar initiative to upgrade I-71 to three lanes 25 years ago. It has worked beautifully. Tolling is a consumer-based model whereby revenue is generated by those who use it. It makes perfect sense. With the onset of EVs (which limits gas tax revenue), increased population (which increases the number of vehicles passing over I-70) and the increased cost of construction, this is a sensible solution for everybody. I’m surprised he hasn’t supported tolling for I-65, I-69 and I-64 as well. He could have a “One Pass” for all Interstates in Indiana.
Expansion of (2) lanes need to be for commercial vehicles GVW 20,000 + ONLY. Smaller trucks, vans, passenger vehicles should not have to drive alongside 80,000 pound death machines. The smaller, non commercial vehicles should have a 5 cent per mile fee (not 10) or US 40 will be the ‘new I-70’ creating more problems.
Tolls need to be weight based. Road damage (wear and tear) is a geometric function of vehicle weight.
And that means all-electric vehicles are getting a free ride now and need to pay a lot more because they are heavier than those powered by internal combustion engines…Elon’s Cybertrucks weigh almost 7,000 pounds, a thousand pounds more than the 4 door 4WD Chevy Silverado; Prius Prime (plug-in) is 15% heavier than its hybrid version.
And…NO TRUCKS IN THE LEFT LANE. EVER. ANYWHERE on a 3-lane highway. This includes box trucks, pickups with trailers, service trucks, tow trucks…
Getting rid of that prohibition is among the least safe highway practices ever enacted by the State Legislature.
I like the idea of charging by weight.
Unbelievable, agree what happened to the billion dollar surplus the Republicans bragged about for years. What happens at the airport? Do we pay a toll every time we go to the airport.
There are OTHER ways to get to the airport BESIDES the interstate!!! I’ve done it SEVERAL TIMES!!!
I don’t know how you people can pay for IBJ then post comments as dumb as these. We have a a couple hundred million dollar surplus, aka a rainy day fund for when things are bad. I-70 will be multi billion project with a “B”. We either raise taxes for it or toll. You boomers can complain but at least make sense.
+1
Or cancel the Braun Boondoggle and use that money instead for an extra lane on I-70.
Jon, these complainers are not Boomers, they are x,y and z’s with no knowledge of how it all
works.
I applaud Governor Braun. This is leadership. No one else would do this.
No one else would bill the Mid-States corridor either so hopefully he doesn’t do that.
So for the average automobile, you’ll pay more in tolls than in gas to get across Indiana That fee is crazy high.
I would be interested in knowing how well our crack congressional delegation was able to bring federal highway dollars to Indiana – or not. This HW 70 proposal perhaps would not be proposed if the delegation had actually done its job for Indiana. Take a look at 65 as well. It should be 3 lanes throughout the state.
No to tolls! What does the national DOT contribute??? Take your time do ten miles a year…but no to tolls!!!!!!
It’s interesting that I-65 through both KY and TN is 3 lane all the way and there are no tolls. Our roads and streets are an embarrassment.
I-65 is not three lanes all the way through Kentucky or Tennessee.
Maybe Mitch Daniels should have not sold the toll road back years ago.
Daniels said they would fund the roads for 20 years and Holcomb raised the gas tax 10cents…. And our roads are still terrible….Curious what the budget is for interstates from the State and the block grants from the US govt….
And BOTH companies bought them went BANKRUPT!!!
Where is the sunset for new toll road charges? Like most new taxes, these will go to infinity.
Love it. but don’t charge Indiana residents! only people passing through.
oh and don’t build a bunch of toll plazas – scanners and cameras…
If I70 is a toll road U.S. 40 will become the preferred route for most drivers
Maybe if they want to take their time with a nice leisurely drive. What about people in a hurry and/or who don’t want to deal with stoplights?
According to Google Maps, Richmond to Terre Haute using the “avoid highways” option takes 3 hours 56 minutes.
Using I-70 it’s 2 hours 28 minutes (if you drive the speed limit, and no one does). More like 2 hours and 10 minutes.
No one will be using US40 across Indiana to avoid tolls when it would take almost twice as long.
The folks complaining about the state of our roads in one breath while calling for them to be widened in the next are very funny to me
Legalize marijuana and toll semis. Problem solved.
A. IDOT is incompetent on major road repair
B. Charge half that #, measure how far trucks drive part-way or state line to state line. Charge car traffic 33%. If anything
C. Get rid camera tickets, workers are behind concrete walls, and work very little.
