The Catholic Church doesn’t deserve the convenience of bankruptcies. Each archdiocese that was complicit for abuse should suffer a long, slow death of attrition while settling each individual case. The real shame of it all is there is no accountability in any given diocese or archdiocese. If an archdiocese is/was run by a pedophile Archbishop, then the entire archdiocese became/becomes a safe environment for pedophiles. These diocese are run as dictatorships, pure and simple. There is zero accountability to Rome outside of the flavor of the reign of the acting Pope. And, no one has addressed the accountability yet. As late as the last United States Conference of Catholic Bishops last month, self-reporting to the authorities for pedophilia and abuse among the clergy was not unanimously approved.
And, look no farther than the Indy Archdiocese for an example of misguided dictatorial leadership. Of the ~3200 bishops worldwide, the Indy Archbishop Charles Thompson decided to use sexuality among the lay employees at his Catholic high schools as a beacon for his legacy. As he demanded the firings of multiple employees at his Archdiocesean schools, he was busy burying yet another pedophilia case in his own Archdiocese (see Father Marcotte). And, look what his sexuality crusade got him. A reprimand from the Vatican for the Brebeuf HS ruling and a likely a class action lawsuit and Supreme Court case for the Cathedral/Roncalli HS ruling. Until the chain of command and legal accountability of the bishops changes, all of these bishops will run their diocese in a rogue manner (in the name of God, obviously). The ones that purvey a culture of hypocritical homosexuality and pedophilia (which is an enormous number) should suffer a slow death of attrition by lawsuit and settlement.

Count me as about 80%-90% in agreement. I’m not at all moved by their problems, which were (and continue to be!) completely self-inflicted. As to priests who are no longer alive to defend themselves, there is really only one reason that’s the case – the church cover-up that discouraged bringing these issues to light, negotiation of private settlements with NDAs for some of the kids, while other victims of the same priest were cowering in fear, shame, depression, suicidal ideation, etc.
