MARCUS: Set sights on education, not graduation

March 25, 2010

The dimmer wits in the Indiana General Assembly want to compensate colleges and universities according to their graduation
rates. This is another example of shallow reasoning by our elected representatives reflecting erroneous thought that has permeated
our society.

MARCUS: Lower business taxes don’t stimulate hiring

March 18, 2010

A job is the
foundation of self-esteem, the linchpin for connecting to the community, the instrument by and through which the individual
connects with the greater international marketplace and derives the income that provides security for the family.

Indiana Experience

March 17, 2010

Opening March 20 Indiana History Center The Indiana History Center’s exhibition areas reopen this week in a big way
with the launch of “Indiana Experience.” Interactive areas, peopled with re-enactors, bring photographs from the
center’s archives to life. New viewing portals allow for detailed searching of the collection.

And there’s more. This weekend, it’s all opening to the public, which means you don’t have to wait to chaperone
your child’s field trip in order to join in on the educational fun. (Of course, you don’t have to do that, anyway—the
History Center is open to the public, although there will now be an admission charge.) Details here. And watch for a video tour of Indiana Experience coming soon at www.ibj.com.

MARCUS: It’s not too late for a high-speed stimulus

March 11, 2010

“Too little, too late” is the standard objection to the economic stimulus program now in effect. That criticism
is based on opinion, not fact. It will take several years to know whether the stimulus (or stimuli, because there was more
than a single stimulus) worked.

ALTOM: Who knew YouTube had potential as a free university?

March 11, 2010

As much as I love and happily use technology, I come from a different age and time when, as they say, life was simpler. I
have students who are aghast that I’d rather use a folded paper map to get around town than a GPS and Google Maps in
a smart phone.

LOU’S VIEWS: Bill T. Jones’ company dances through history at IU

March 4, 2010

A few weeks back, I wrote about the two collections of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia on display at the Indiana
State Museum. Over the past week, two additional encounters with Abe reminded me that there is no shortage of material to be mined from
the life of the 16th president.

MARCUS: Hoosiers hear gospel of gambling

March 4, 2010

Gamblers wagered nearly $30 billion in 13 Indiana
casinos last year. Now, fellow taxpayers, if I understand these numbers, 91 percent of these dollars were returned as winnings and an additional $876 million (3 percent) went to our state and local
governments for our benefit.

MARCUS: Most Hoosiers don’t want mass transit

February 18, 2010

Mass transit plans are doomed to be ignored because no local government, and certainly
not the Indiana General Assembly, is interested in transportation.
