A large century-old house in Southport that had been subdivided into five apartments suffered heavy fire damage Friday morning. Five residents escaped the blaze, which broke out about 3 a.m. in the 100 block of South Street, near East Southport Road and Madison Avenue. One resident was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and a firefighter was checked out at Methodist.
The bodies of two men who had been shot to death were found Thursday evening inside a car in a strip-mall parking lot in Lawrence. Police did not identify the victims, but said they were in their 20s and had been shot multiple times. They were found near 42nd Street and Franklin Road. One victim was in the front seat and the other was in the back. Investigators are reviewing surveillance tapes from nearby businesses.
