Police probe death of pregnant woman

Indianapolis police are seeking suspects in the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old pregnant woman and her fiancé. Whitney Balsley, who was seven weeks pregnant, was shot in the head inside a home in 1800 block of South Drexel Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday. Gary Rife, 27, also was shot in the head but survived. Police say the incident may have been drug-related. Four other people were in the home when the shooting took place, but no arrests have been made.

Police dog killer gets 12 years

Joseph Turner, who was convicted of shooting an Anderson police dog to death after robbing a bank, was sentenced Tuesday morning to 12 years in prison and six additional years of probation. Turner, 22, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including armed robbery, in connection with his Aug. 18 crimes. Turner robbed a PNC branch of more than $2,300 at gunpoint and shot the K-9 officer, named Magnum, while being chased by police.

Denny’s robbery suspect captured

Indianapolis police spent nearly two hours tracking down a man who they say robbed a south-side Denny’s restaurant about 3:15 Tuesday morning. Police said the suspect threatened workers with a weapon resembling a tire iron and took a cash register before fleeing the restaurant near South Keystone Avenue and Interstate 65 in a stolen blue van. The suspect crashed the van about 4 a.m. near Raymond Street and I-65 while being pursued and took off on foot. He was captured an hour later about six blocks from the crash scene.

Earlier online sales tax collection clears Indiana House

Amazon.com and other online-only retailers would have to start collecting Indiana's 7-percent sales tax this summer under a bill approved overwhelmingly by the Indiana House.
